Lake Tolire Besar is certainly worth a look. Situated on the opposite side of the island from the sprawling provincial city of Kota Ternate, it has been spared the ravages of over-development. This is a nice relaxing place where you wander around the crater rim and peer down in the greenish lake. There are a couple of warungs selling coconuts and noodles but this is not the tacky tourist circus which you will find elsewhere in Indonesia. Indeed, in this heat, young coconut milk might be just the thing.
The oddest thing about this crater lake is that there are crocodiles inside the lake. The crater walls are so steep that you wonder how they ever made it in there. You can also see water birds and dense vegetation inside the crater rim. This is much better than the other lake on Ternate (though the other one is free of crocs.)
