First of all it must be noticed that it is not a fortress but a city, a urban centre of the Chachapoyas peoples. THe great wall that surounds it is kind of an enormous terrace that holds the city on top constructed.

Although you can only go on organised guided tours, the experience is worthy as it is surrounded by awesome landscapes and it is a fascinating archeological site. The place is mysterious and makes you wander about this civilization, how did they live and the great achievements they made for the advances they had. I found very impressive the city "walls". It definitively lacks a little museum-building with more detailed information.

Once you are there! It gave me the same spiritual feeling as when I went to Macchu Picchu in 1999. Almost"unreal". It was the highlite of our trip. Amazing Architecture.
If we wouldnt have had the best driver and guide( Rolando and Mitzy from tourcompany MINORTE) though, we might not have made it that day!!! The road was bad, very scary experience. If only they would put some dividers at the edges at some places. Some other tourvans didn't make it. And stopped. Good little restaurant at the top.very few tourists. Good place to meditate.

The whole journey there along with the information given by the guide made this a sensational trip. Being in the ruins felt like being in a lost city nestled in the mountains but also in a jungle.

Very nice place to go, not only the place but the way to go there is incredible. Driving through the mountains is an unforgetable experience!
Roads are in good conditions so it is also safe. If you go in rain season, just take a good protection with you and it will be ok.

Forget the crowds if machu pichu , the arms and heads in the photos , you will have this place to yourself with maximum of 9 in your group. You will really get a feeling for this place and feel the excitement of being at a pre inca site, bigger, older and higher and far less touristy than machu pichu.

The travel to get to this place isn't nice. Getting to chachapoyas isn't a pleasurable journey, I arrived from huanchacho, but once you arrive here it's easy to settle and find a hostel. The trip to kuelap was around 3 and a half hours. Unfortunately for me it was with a Spanish guide but I had my girlfriend with me to translate so wasn't a problem.
The place is really big and you can get up close to all the ruins with some great views of the distant mountains. These ruins look like someone found them a week ago, they're not all polished up and made to look pretty, they're in thick forest with trees growing around them which give them an ever better visual look.

If you are in Peru, make the effort, get on that bus to chachapoyas and see this place now before it's too late. I've heard the Peru government are going to label this place machu pichu 2, and in the next few years tourism here is going to boom. So get there now while you can still have it to yourself .
