“Outdated, lacking in comfort”

May be mostly a family hotel for the winter ski season, while I was there on business in early June. Older property, I wonder how much longer they can go on without a thorough renovation. Small (narrow) beds. Bathroom functional. No easy ventilation: it was warm, but opening a window could easily have let mosquitoes in. Amazingly, there were only light curtains and no blinds against the midnight sun! Breakfast options are limited, dinner was tasty, however. One night I returned to the hotel at 1.30 a.m., to find the entrance locked and nobody answering the doorbell; while I understand the reception desk cannot be staffed around the clock, this general lock-down policy was not clearly stated or posted anywhere, and seemed absurd for this low profile hotel in its apparently safe environment, especially since individual rooms do have their own door locks obviously. Luckily, there was a couple from another room who were enjoying the gorgeous light and balmy weather on the upstairs balcony at the back. They had unlocked a door from the dining area, and let me in that way. The highlight of this hotel was the sauna, with its landing to swim in the lake (or rather dipping in and dashing straight out again, as thin ice sheets were still floating on the water!).

Kilpisjärvi is very peculiar, one of the most remote villages in Finland. The scenery is wonderful - as long as you keep your eyes above the buildings. Due to remoteness and the short tourist season, there is nothing cheap and decent. You can have a hostel room at the Hotel Kilpis for 70 EUR outside the peak season. The hostel rooms are very basic, and the shared toilets and bathrooms (one for ladies, one for men) are even more basic, but I found them relatively clean. There is no wifi at the hotel but 3G network works just fine.

The hotel itself is very shabby - which is characteristics to all hotels belonging to the same chain. But the restaurant is good (compared to others in the village) and staff is really nice and welcoming.

If you look for luxury, don't go to Kilpisjärvi at all. If you enjoy exploring something different, this might be the place. Don't expect much from the built environment, let the nature capture you.

This hotel wasn't worth the money. We paid a rate of EUR 116.-- for a "Hostel room". But there was no toilett, shower or water in the room. The showers on the corridor looked disgusting. Hairs all around. I regret not have taken any pictures of that.
I've never seen such a bad price-service-ratio in a finnish hotel.

Room Tip: Don't book any "Hostel rooms".

Hotel Kilpis is built in the fifties and unfortunately is a protected building. This maybe explains why there is no more modern compound in this magnificent spot. As everything is expensive in Kilpisjärvi, we didn't find 180€ for a duplex apartment with two rooms, kitchen and an own sauna too expensive. The apartment was quite outdated but clean. You might find more value for your money with renting a cabin close by uphill, but then You'd miss the great breakfast buffe.
A hike to the Saana is a must thing to do. If you don't have the whole day, You might want to drive to the northwest corner and start from the camping ground. Sturdy wooden stairs lead halfway up, so elderly people in good condition can also get almost the whole view. One option is to take tho whole hike up and around the Saana (15-18 km depending on the shortcuts You make). There is a lot of other hiking possibilities.

We had a room for two in the hotel. The room was okay, maybe a little bit outdated. Bathroom was great and had plenty of room. There was special drying room for clothes in the corridor, which was great for wet clothes (after hiking to Saana). Plenty of parking spaces.

Restaurant was quite expensive, more of a fine-dining type of place. Food was okay.

The staff was really helpful and nice :)

The hotel is nothing special at all. Rooms are basic and very noisy I would recommend that you bring ear plugs.

Restaurant and Breakfast very good

The price level is very high compared to what you get for same price other places in Lapland.
