Booked through secret escapes - 2 nights in Gulo Gulo holiday village and one in the Artic fox igloos.
We had the Igloo on our first night which was amazing - compact but everything you could want in there including a great sauna..looking out at the stars and the iced snowy lake was mesmerising.
The Log cabin in Gulo Gulo holiday village was also fantastic - well equipped with everything you could want including a super useful clothes drying cupboard !

Second to none however are the trips - not cheap but unmissable - we did the Finn horse sleigh for our first night - absolutely fantastic and you can see how much the owner loves and cares for his horses - a truly amazing trip through snowy forests stopping halfway for hot juice and biscuits around a camp fire ,snowmobiling safari second night and last day the incredible 2 hour husky sledding trip - the dogs love every minute and again are so well looked after and cared for - an exhilarating but very safe ride !
Don’t worry about buying expensive snow suits and boots, when you check in you are given these to hold on to for your entire stay - just take your jumpers and thermals - they also give you gloves and balaclavas if needed.
The fabulous trip guides and people at reception look after you every step of the way and all excursions are superbly well organised .
If you are self catering, the coach will also stop at the supermarket for you to stock up before arriving - every thing has been thought about !
Thank you for a fabulous trip Gulo Gulo - we won’t forget !

I'll try to keep this review short, but it may be difficult as there is a lot to say!

My husband and I visited Holiday Village Gulo Gulo for our honeymoon - we love the outdoors, colder places and of course we wanted to see the Aurora. We were not disappointed at all. We booked our package through secret escapes -2 nights at Gulo Gulo and 1 night at the Arctic Fox Igloos. Both were pretty epic.

The lodges are comfortable, warm, the kitchen has everything you need in it, there is a clothes drying cupboard, theres a sauna (perfect end to the day), beds are comfortable, loads of storage space, clean...generally just a high quality place to stay.

In terms of gear to take, I would just take a suitable coat (down filled preferably), good winter boots, a couple of base layers (tops and bottoms), couple of mid layers, a good hat, and a buff. The boots and snow suit you get on arrival is more than enough. The boots and coat are just to get you there and back and for meals.

We did the cross country skiing, husky sled ride (1hr), and snow shoe walking at night. Cross country skiing was the most fun activity out of the 3. Husky sled was a must, it's a great experience, however we felt an hour was long enough. Both of us experienced driving the sled which was great. The snow show walking at night was amazing. Our guide was great and was really knowledgable about the area and animals. We also saw the Aurora of which the guide took photos and sent us them when we returned to Gulo Gulo. We were very lucky! I'd recommend all 3 activities.

The zoo is a fantastic experience, both in the light and dark. The animals are so well cared for and happy! We went round once a day. I'd recommend wearing the boots provided.

The Arctic Fox Igloos are definitely an experience worth having if travelling as a couple. It's a little disappointing when it is cloudy but still a great experience.

At both Gulo Gulo and the Igloos, the service and food were fantastic - both breakfast and dinner.

My only criticism would be that if going to the Igloos from Gulo Gulo, you check out of the lodges at 11 but are not transferred until 2pm. So you have 3 hours to fill. We didnt book any activities and as there was some tourist groups the cafeteria was full so couldn't go anywhere for lunch. I would recommend booking activities and preparing some food for that period of time, some sandwiches or something. Other than that, it was fabulous.

We stayed here for 3 days and loved it, I didn't want to leave. It's stunningly beautiful with the snow all around.

We had 6 of us so had two apartments that join. The join was very simple and easy to use, it was a good balance of being together, but still having separate spaces. We'd put the kids to bed in one apartment and sat in the lounge in the other apartment.

It had a sauna in the bathroom, which was a nice touch.

The venue provided sledges which was fantastic as we pulled the kids everywhere and they thought it was so much fun.

The view from the back of the apartment was so lovely, the forest covered in snow was breathtakingly beautiful.

The activities that were organised were magical. We did Husky Sledging (my favourite), meet father Christmas, reindeer sledging, snowmobile and meet the polar bear. For the snow mobile they put the kids in what looked like a space shuttle and the guide pulled them on his snow mobile, so it worked well. Father Christmas was absolutely magical.

The negatives were the food. There's no shop or anything to buy anything such as fruit, sandwiches, tea, coffee etc. The lunch cafe was substandard, a poor buffet (although the soup was nice) or fried food. If we'd have known this before hand we'd have bought a lot more food from the store on the way there.

The food in the evening was average. It was a buffet, which we didn't realise and were disappointed with. The food was ok but boring, and on the 2nd and 3rd day the beef dish was exactly the same, which I thought was really poor of them. The starters were the same every day, so I don't know if they just had no imagination, or they used the same food each day, which is a horrible thought.

If the food was better it would be excellent, but the food really let the place down. If you stay, go to the supermarket and buy supplies! But it is definitely worth going to as the apartments and activities are fantastic

We only stayed here one night but it was incredibly comfortable and would have been nice to stay longer. Plenty of room and kitchen contained everything needed to cook for ourselves. Staff were great, b’fast was satisfactory. Paid for an early morning feed the polar bear/arctic fox experience - this was amazing! Only negative was that the guides gave the opportunity for feeding the fox to the children first so we didn’t get to do it. If you pay the money you should get to experience everything offered.

Room tip: All rooms are the same

Janne was our guide today for Artic Fishing from the Gulo Gulo Holiday Village in Ranua. The trip lasted several hours, we recurved snowmobile instruction and drive with the children to a from lake 30 mins away. My youngest son ride up from with Janne on his snowmobile and had an excellent view!
At the lake we brought up nets then drilled a corkscrew through 30-40cm of ice, baited our hooks with maggots and waited. Unfortunately the fish weren’t biting today - first time all winter there’s been nothing. However this didn’t matter!
Janne set up a fire for us and we drank warm berry juice and ate sausages cooked on the fire. We talked about bushcraft a lot, Janne had such patience for the children. Such a good experience!
Driving the snowmobiles back was great fun! Such an excellent trip and fantastic guide! Thank you Janne!
