Great Barrier Island is a great place to visit - remarkably unspoilt, very quiet, deserted perfect beaches, very few people. It’s difficult to believe how close you are to Auckland, you can even see the top half of the Sky Tower over the horizon through the lodge telescope! Most of the roads are unsealed, adding to the atmosphere if not the comfort. You even need a four wheel drive to access the lodge – I am not kidding. But either Trevor will transport you to and from the airfield or you can hire one which is a good idea in order to see around the island and don’t forget that it is large, the 4th largest in NZ.

There are just three suites, all superbly equipped and extremely comfortable with faultless facilities. This is a seriously relaxing place to stay. During the first two nights of our stay we were the only guests and were massively pampered, quite idyllic really.
Dinner was included in the deal and was cooked by Trevor a chef par excellence! Must have been six courses, and before each course he explained the ingredients and the preparation. From their own olives from the garden to the more exotic items imported from afar every last mouthful at dinner and breakfast was delicious. As well as being delicious the meal became an entertaining event too. On the third night there were six of us at dinner and it turned into a really enjoyable and very sociable evening.

Our experience at Earthsong was truly memorable, we will definitely return. Trevor and Carol were wonderful hosts and provided us with a faultless stay.
When you include the flights it turns into a fairly expensive trip but is very well worth it. During our flight back, whilst on the approach to Auckland Airport the pilot did a sudden 360 turn so we could get a view of the whale below, it was then that we were reminded that this wasn’t an every day trip!

We had never been to Great Barrier Island and were staying at the lodge for a family member's birthday. The island itself is very quiet and remote but pristine with beautiful bush and beaches.

The lodge which is very near the small town of Tryphena, is approached by 4WD along a coarse gravel driveway which traverses a couple streams and climbs a steep grade at the end which reveals the splendid adobe style lodge surrounded by olive trees and lovely lawn and garden areas. They are on a hillside with lovely views towards the sea. The main lodge building houses the lounge and dining areas. The 3 guest rooms are in a separate building joined to the main lodge by a covered walkway. All 3 rooms are roomy with views to the ocean and a balcony as well as a sheltered courtyard. They all have ensuite bathrooms with plenty of towels supplied including beach towels. The rooms and bathrooms all feature beautiful recycled native timbers. We were delighted that we also had a constant supply of hot water and milk to make tea/coffee in our room as well as fresh fruit and home baking.

The furnishings throughout the lodge and rooms are in keeping with the warm timbers used everywhere in the buildings. There is nothing minimalist or designer here but just down to earth comfort.

The food is superb. Trevor Rendle does wonders with the true flavours of foods. Again there are no pretensions here but just well thought out and delicious meals made with the best local organic ingredients. Our birthday person even had a special dinner menu made for them including a birthday cake.

It was such a treat to explore the island each day and return to the sanctuary of the lodge for a sumptious meal and a beautiful room to retire to.

The service and attention was warm, friendly and understated and nothing was a problem. At the same time the hosts would join in socialising each night which gave the place an atmosphere of conviviality.

We were made to feel so much at home while being pampered that we would have no problems in returning to stay in future.

We just returned from a wonderful time on Gt Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf. The occasion was our friends' 20th wedding anniversary and it couldn't have been more special. The flight from Auckland airport was spectacular - and all organised by Earthsong.
The anniversary dinner was a treat! fresh asparagus, lobster tails, spring lamb, etc, etc!! Trevor is a wizz in the kitchen. The wines we chose were great too. Five courses later and we were ready for an early night.
The chalets have immense views and we appreciated them next morning from the balcony. We slept like tops.
Beautiful breakfasts, and one of us had the best mushroom omelette he'd ever had!
We saw wonderful sites, beaches, flora and fauna around the island and were directed to Roses Cafe for a casual but delicious lunch.
We all wished we could have stayed a third night but duty called! We will return next year!

We were completely overwhelmed by the experience. Went for 40th Wedding anniversary which they handled perfectly. Location superb and food equally so such that we found ourselves really looking forward to each evening. Trevor and Carol were great hosts.

This was a very nice stay in New Zealand, not cheap, but worth the price.
The accommodation is excellent with a beautiful view on the bay of Tryphena. The place is remote (for the path of entrance you need a four wheel drive) and in the garden you can easily spot kingfishers and the banded rail. Carol is a very nice hostess and Trevor an excellent cook.
So for a special occasion or just for a great holiday we can recommend the Earthsong lodge very much.

Earthsong Lodge on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand, is truly a beautiful place. Our hosts Trevor & Carol were very knowledable and helpful. Along with a 5 star menu and comprehensive wine list enabled us to really relax and thoroughly enjoy our stay. I would highly recommend Earthsong to anyone wanting to enjoy a unique NZ island experience.

A new lodge set high up on a hillside with superb views of the bay.

We were collected by Trevor, our host in his Pajero/Shogun and taken the short journey to the lodge. Earthsong Lodge is about 1 km off the main road and reached by a gravel track cut through native forest, which is why there is a need for a 4 wheel drive vehicle as there are steep inclines and a ford to negotiate.

Once there you realise why Trevor and Carol chose this spot to build their lodge, it is idyllic. If isolation is your bag, this place is heaven.

Rooms; spacious, bright, nicely decorated and furnished.

Bathroom; actually a shower room, no bath, but did have a bidet.

Lounge; the ground floor of the host’s accommodation is open plan and we were able to use the lounge which had a lovely seating area with a large window with superb views. A telescope allows you to see birds, dolphins, whales and in the far distance, Auckland, on a clear day.

Breakfast; taken in the open plan area and very nicely prepared by Trevor.

Evening meal; I should explain that Trevor is an experienced chef, the food he prepared was absolutely wonderful, I cannot find adequate words to express just how good the food was. Even the pre-dinner canapés were out of this world. If he were a chef in Europe he would easily warrant a Michelin star rating. Trevor takes great pride in his food and comes out from the kitchen to the dining table to explain and describe exactly what he has prepared for you. If you have special dietary requirements he will tailor the menu to suit, nothing, and I mean nothing, is too much trouble. The wine list contains all the best of NZ wines.

Grounds; set on a hillside with lawns, orchard and olive grove to the front. To the rear a vegetable garden from which the evening meal is prepared using the freshest organic ingredients and it even has a helipad. Then there is the entrance track, quite an experience in itself.

Eco friendly; the walls of the building are constructed from bales of straw which have been rendered. The whole building is self sufficient with regard to main services. It has rainwater retention tanks, pumped water from the local stream, electricity from batteries charged from solar panels and generator. The power system is designed to cope with average consumption but can be stretched at high demand periods, so don’t expect high current appliances, for instance you will find a Thermos flask of hot water in your room to make yourself coffee or tea, not a kettle.

Out and about; Trevor and Carol arranged for a hire car to be delivered to the lodge. We were able to see most of this beautiful island in one day, following a guide sheet prepared by Carol.

Trevor kindly dropped us off at Claris airport (shed) for our journey back. As I said earlier, nothing was too much trouble.

Conclusion; the very best NZ accommodation, finest of hosts, unusual lodge design, fantastic food, good wine list, seclusion, silence, relaxing. Got the picture? A lovely experience and one we will talk about for years to come.
