This hotel doesn’t look impressive from the outside but it’s very clean and freshly renovated inside. We stayed in a junior suite on the 3rd or 4th floor (be aware, there is no elevator). It seems like the owner did put a lot of thinking into designing very nice comfortable rooms. However, the service is very limited and very Russian. The most of the personnel is very grumpy and unfriendly. They do what you ask them to do but everything is done as a big favour to you.
The hotel is located within a walking distance to the historical center. It takes about 10-15 min to reach restaurants and sites. However, the walk could be somewhat unpleasant due to crumbling/lack of sidewalks.
The majority of people staying there are Russian business travelers. They work hard during a day and party hard at night. One night the party was going on until 4:00 in the morning. It was especially laud since the guests decided to party with their door open. However, a phone call to the front desk did solve the problem (well, they closed the door but continued partying).
The breakfast at the hotel is a typical “cold cuts” European breakfast. Be prepared to wrestle some Russians for the last piece of cheese/salami :-)The staff does replenish platters but the service is quite slow. The tables get cleaned in a very slow manner as well. To speed up the process just ask a staff member to clean it. As we found out on the 6th day of our stay (it was Saturday) a nice lady from the kitchen can make you fried eggs. It was indeed a very nice touch. Unfortunately, the nice lady was gone on Monday. Two Russian guests tried to get their fried eggs from her replacement. I think they did get them at the end, but after a 30- min wait.
And one more annoying thing. The hotel advertises itself as a hotel with an unlimited hot water supply. Not completely true. It turned out that the unlimited hot water supply depends on the number of people staying at the hotel. Apparently, the hotel’s hot water tank is too small. And, if the hotel is full you won’t be able to have a hot shower in the morning. Your best bet is to shower in the afternoon or at night.
Overall, the hotel is quite good despite its shortcomings.
