“the Heart of Chivay”
Reviewed June 5, 2014

Typical South American central square - the hub of local activity with a central fountain and a church on one side. During our visit there was a festival where the local villagers get together and ‘plant’ trees adorned with presents into the concrete roadway on all four corners of the square and then spend the night drinking, dancing and chopping it down. It made our cold, rainy afternoon there much more interesting!

“Juanita statue”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

Plaza de Armas is the natural place to start a tour of the town of Chivay. At 3600m above sea level, most people spend the night here before heading on into Colca Canyon. The plaza is mostly one big garden, with tall trees and a couple of seats. In the middle is a rather creepy statue of Juanita, the famous frozen mummy which you can see in Arequipa. Beside the square is the 18th C Church of our Lady of the Assumption, and next to this a street market which opens late into the evening. This is a nice place to slow down and acclimatise to altitude.

“Quiet place to relax”
Reviewed May 14, 2014

Chivay is a tiny town so there's not much to do, people visit this place for Colca Canyon and the mighty condors. The Plaza was very quiet, the church was closed the day we got there, there is some lovely figures around the plaza and around the town.

“The town centre”
Reviewed March 25, 2014

It’s rather a quiet town, but it’s all centered around Plaza de Armas, and it seems to be mainly centered around the tourists who pass through here on their way to the Colca Canyon. At the plaza you will find many colourful Indian characters, often using baby llamas to attract your attention (see my photos).
