“Character and Comfort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2007

We spent just one night here in September 2007, when we took an overnight package excursion to the Colca Canyon from Arequipa. We certainly recommend Pozo de Cielo for such a short stay, and it would be even better as a base for exploring the area for several days.

The hotel sits outside the town of Chivay (entrance to the Colca Canyon) about 3/4 of a mile on a hill, with panoramic views of the town and the mountains beyond. The hotel consists of a cluster of buildings designed to make it look like a mountain village. The rustic Peruvian country theme is carried throughout the furnishings and decor, and is really very charming. Rooms are arranged around a courtyard, and no two seem to be on the same level. Ours (#207) was large, with one double bed and one twin bed. It had an open-beam ceiling and whitewashed walls. There was not much room for clothes or storage, only a series of pegs and a long open shelf on one wall. The tiled bathroom was large and attractive with a shower and lots of counter space.

The dining room views were very beautiful and the area had been designed to take full advantage of them, with large windows along one side. Adjoining the dining room was a bar/lounge area that was very comfortable and inviting. Lunch and dinner (included with our tour) were simple yet very tasty, as was breakfast the next morning.

The staff was efficient, friendly, and very helpful. For example, when one of us had altitude sickness problems (Chivay is at 12,000 feet), the manager had food sent to our room, administered oxygen, provided hot water bottles, etc. It was truly extraordinary service.

Overall, we highly recommend the Pozo de Cielo for its charm, comfort, and value.

Here is a nice place in Chivay, where we stayed one night on our Colca tour. The beds are confortable with enough covers to keep you warm (otherwise there is a radiator too - perfect to heat up the bathroom for the morning shower!), the water in the shower is sufficiently warm and towels and shampoo/soap are provided. Breakfast starts early (we breakfasted at 6am) and features eggs, bread, cheese, ham, jam, coffee/tea and juice. Staff was friendly too (although I was too knocked out by altitude sickness to notice).
It's a short walk to the town centre, about 5 min accross the bridge. Nice view out of the rooms' windows and from the restaurant bay windows. Good homey dinner available for reasonable prices.
I would definitely come back, and perhaps stay 2 days to take better advantage of the nice market in town and of the surroundings.

  • Liked — The cosy rustic charm and the quiet setting a bit outside of town
  • Disliked — No ramp on the stairs leading to the room, vertigo-sufferes beware!
