“Ideal base to see Colca Canyon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

We stayed in the hotel for two nights to have the time to see the Colca Canyon and Cruz del Condor, for which we booked the minivan tour from Arequipa.
The village is small and with many unpaved streets, but it's not a problem to get to the hotel with a walk from the bus station, the first impression is immediately positive and the staff is welcoming.
Rooms are big and structured as private bungalows; due to high height the nights are very cold, but in the evening the hotel staff bring bottles of hot water to put in the bed to warm it in addition to the heater that is in every room. The coats are anyway very heavy and after the first moments you can sleep warm (but if you have to go to bathroom you will feel the cold chill of the night).
Breakfast is rich enough and free "mate" is available at the reception 24x7, and in the restaurant there are often Andean traditional show.
In the hotel there is also an astronomical observatory where you can follow a simple lesson on South-American skies (I didn't because I had fever that night, but my fellow travellers did and they enjoyed it).
Prices are high compared to Peruan standards, but aligned with the quality of the structure.
Last advice: if you are in Chivay (here in Casa Andina or anywhere else) around 15th of August forget to taste the sound of silence, because it is the week of local religious fair with processions and traditional music played at every hour of the day and the night.
Of course this is not a defect of the hotel (even if my score on quality of sleep is somewhat influenced by this experience), all the village is invaded by music and high spirits (and rivers of alcohol, I presume) and it is vey funny to be here, if you can bear trumpets played suddenly at 3:00 AM...

I stayed at this hotel, in April - when I spent 31 days in Peru and Bolivia- and stayed at over 15 hotels, as part of the trip!!

This particular one was given to me as an alternative to a really remote and empty hotel in the Andes- where I had stayed one night- and then got fed up of it; as there was no one else that night and the place was very dark and eerie. So, my tour company moved me to this Casa Andina- which was a good move.

Overall, the hotel is very nice, the staff are quite helpful and reasonably friendly.

The views from outside the hotel - of the snow-capped El Misti and other near-by mountains, is just really beautiful- but there are even better views in Peru and Bolivia!

The lounge area of this hotel is very large, spacious and warm. Fellow travellers I met at this hotel, became my friends over time.
The rooms are nice and comfy for short-term stay.

Hope you all enjoy your stay in Peru- which is the MOST BEAUTIFUL country(in terms of nature and wild life), in the world!!
I will someday live in Peru...

Chivay does not have a lot to offer so don't expect a lot. This is a collection of cottages and the rooms are small but satisfactory. It was cold in November and each room has a plug in heater to provide some comfort. It is very basic but with a lot of charm. We enjoyed the meals in the restaurant and the entertainment during the dinner was fun. There were issues with the availability of water but it is a town problem not just a hotel issue.

Nice place after the bus journey out of Arequipa. Clean and warm. They put a hot water bottle in your bed in the evening which was a nice touch. Comfy bed.

A little bit out of town so a bit of a trek down to the main square.

Rooms are in individual bungalows which have very efficient electric heaters that are needed at night due to the altitude when the temperature drops. Shower room has heating lamp. Hot water seems to take an age to come through, but when it did, it was piping hot and forceful.
Hot waters bottles (wine bottle with cork in a sock!!) in our bed while we were at evening meal - a lovely surprise.
Breakfast a bit of a scum but all the usual things available. Free Coca Tea on tap.
Walking distance to town centre.

Room Tip: Some rooms a long way from the restaurant. Ask to be close when it is cold.

We loved our 'bungalow' near the observatory, it was spacious with a good bathroom. I particularly liked it when they came round with hot water bottles in the evening to warm the beds (wine bottles filled with hot water!). The beds were comfy with plenty of blankets and a duvet as it could get a bit chilly at nights at this altitude.
The only thing that disappointed us was the restaurant food - we were on a full board arrangement and the menu never changed between lunch and dinner. The food was ok, but nothing spectacular and the service wasn't always the best.

Chivay is a kind of forgettable town, but the hotel was nice and private. The room we had had exposed wood beam construction that lent it a nice local flair.

Service was overall pretty good, I'd say excellent aside from this one thing...we had some trouble trying to book a spa appointment (maybe asking too much for a 3 star hotel)—basically we tried to book a massage, they told us they would call the masseuse to see what their availability was and get back to us—except they never got back to us, even to tell us whether or not they had reached the masseuse. So we ended up wasting an afternoon waiting for the front desk to call, which they never did. We called them a number of times, and their response was, "don't worry, we'll call you". I would have expected them to give us a more clear time frame by which we would have confirmation or cancel the massage request. As it was handled, they wasted our time. If they can't have someone regularly on the premises, I'd rather they recommended a place in town. Again, aside from this, the service was fine. A little bit of personnel training in communication would solve this quickly.
