The Stray Possum Lodge
Reviewed January 28, 2009

I was searching for another entry on this website when I saw this review and thought "hang on a minute, that's not really fair", and felt I had to add my 2 cents worth.

I guess everyone has different views, but mine is that the Stray Possum Lodge is a decent enough place - it's a backpackers after-all. It's not luxury, but the (under new management when I went) staff were really friendly and had big plans for the place.... the food was not WOW but it was great for a backpackers.

There's a great outside covered deck / verandha where all the meals are taken and in the evening, after dinner / BBQ etc, they often have live music (some local, some flown in artists).

The accommodation is nothing spectacular, but it is adequate and simple enough for a backpackers - clean rooms with bunks or rooms with doubles, run in a row along a raised deck overlooking quite lovely gardens - there's a shower / toilet block at the end of the deck. I would say it could be quite noisy if there was a party going on in the kitchen as the walls are quite thin, but we never had any issues (stayed 8 days) and there were plenty of other travellers there. Anyway, this would be the same anywhere really!

There are also stand alone tree houses available that looked fantastic, although these were fully booked when I stayed there (I did look through the windown and they looked great - downstairs living area and then a staircase up to th bedroom I imagine! Not sure if they are ensuite).

The surrounding area is quite bushy and lovely (yes, that means bring mosquito repellent!) - great for bush walks and very quiet - lots of bird life....

Overall, I would say, great value for money, reasonable food and accommodation and friendly, helpful staff (even if they did seem a little bit rough around the edges, but I believe that comes from living in such a place all year round - it must be quite a hard place during winter!!)

Recommend as a low-cost base!

Best of luck and cheers
Sol

Don't bother staying here. Not only is it really far from anywhere, but the proprietress is absolutely horrible and treated us like we were unwelcome idiots rather than paying guests. Sometimes at campgrounds you get owners who are a bit surly or stressed out in the holiday season, but this was something else.

We arrived and they'd lost our booking, but instead of apologising she looked at us like we were criminals when we said we wanted to camp for two nights. We paid upfront, but left after the first night because of the bad service and the owners starting up a party in the middle of the (Monday) night involving really loud bogan music coming from the bar and quad bikes being ridden round and round and round.

We love camping and we've stayed in lots of places and can put up with a certain level. Basic courtesy doesn't seem to exist here and they refused a refund or an apology when we explained we were leaving because we found this unacceptable. When we told some locals we were staying here, they said, "Do you want us to recommend some other places?" straight away.

Other staff members we encountered were friendly enough, and it seems like this could be a lovely place to stay if it were a bit nicer. I reckon though that since the owner can afford to be so rude to guests, they obviously don't want your money, so spend it somewhere where you're actually welcomed.
