We stayed here as a couple camping in our van. On arrival we were told we'd have to park on the road, no vehicles allowed on the grass. We enquired about dinner as pizza bar was advertised with opening hours. We were told we were too late, orders were needed by morning time if we wanted dinner. The campsite was peaceful enough until a roaring generator started up at about 6pm. We understand that there is no electricity on grid on great barrier so we were tolerant enough until 10.30pm. We went up to the main house to enquire about what time they turn it off only to find the place in complete darkness and nobody around. The whole set up was pretty poor; the generator appeared to be charging only a quad bike and could easily have been placed on the other side of the property away from paying customers. A truck pulled up about 10 minutes later and owners and staff piled out . Nobody said a word to us until I politely shouted over the noise of the generated, asking what time it gets turned off. The owners said nothing until one of the staff asked him directly, he then looked at his watch and said "about 11ish". They didn't say anything else to us and so we walked back to our van feeling like idiots. Overall owners were incredibly rude and we were left with a bad taste in our mouth. We went straight back to DOC campsite the next day.

Terrible....

The owner didn't really seem to know what she was doing, which was a shame because the location was beautiful. The place was dirty and very poorly maintained. A 'Worker' that just sat around doing nothing while everything was filthy. Not sure if the rooms/beds had been cleaned they smelt really musty. The worse thing was when we woke to no water....no shower, no flushing toilet, you can only imagine! That's when we left and went to a much nicer place down the road. Really don't waste your money, pay a little bit more somewhere else for a much better experience.

Awesome place to stay. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. One of the staff, John, always offered to smoke the fish that we caught, which he did. Best smoked fish ever :)

Nice setting in a small gully surrounded by tea tree, manuka and other native trees. Owls chilling in the trees close by at night, good company after a long day of fishing and relaxing. Will definitely be back!

Room Tip: The chalets look alot nicer if your looking for something like that. We stayed in the back packer do...

Water was off when we arrived, apparently a member of staff had left a tap on. About 24 hours later, the water was restored but no hot water. Appreciate these things happen in remote places, but the woman owner was super defensive and surly about it. Ended up going to a nearby lodge (3kms away) for an excellent hot shower (and cheerful reception). Winnie the maintenance man was friendlier by a country mile, even to the point of saving us some scallops from his diving exploits. Facilities were quite grubby - if the place had been cleaner, the basics had been working and the owner a fraction more welcoming, it would have been about right for the price.

I don't think they bothered cleaning our chalets before we got there so was gross. Just little things like - they don't refill salt or pepper and when asked I was looked at like an idiot. Wish we looked at this page before we went and stayed somewhere else.

What should have been a great experience was marred by the surly reception, zero cooperation and unclean accommodation. Sure part of it is back packers but it also boasts an affodable retreat in self catered chalets with bedding linen etc supplied. We did not expect to find sand in the bottom of the beds indicating no linen change between guests!! The mattresses were lumpy and uncomfortable hardly "retreat" style. Towels were supplied at beginning of stay one towel between 2 people and no replacements!! We enquired about using the advertised shuttle from airport or ferry but were just given the taxi number. Although they advertise daily transport to beaches etc no offer of transport daily or otherwise was available.

Its a case of take your money - fully paid up before you are allowed to view accommodation - then be treated not only with lack of hospitality and service but down right rudeness. If the owner dislikes her job so much why do it??

And the harbour view advertised - not to be seen, as its no where near the harbour!! So the chances of seeing those whales in the advert are zero!! Be prepared to either walk long distances to meet decent Gt Barrier dwellers, rent a car or pay per head for shuttle.

Although there was a restuarant attached based on our experience with owner (also the cook) we weren't prepared to risk it. Thank goodness for the nice people in Mulberry Grove, Rose Cottage Cafe and Irish Pub who showed true Island hospitality and great food.
