I Capricci di Merion
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 28, 2010

We returned last month from our amazing 16 night trip to Italy. We spent
our first four nights at i Capricci di Merion. This lovely inn is just
actually right in town (which was surprising, since from the photos on
the website, it looked like it was in the remote country), but felt
somewhat isolated because of the landscaping and views of the lake in
the distance.

We checked in and were shown our room, the Puccini Room, which was a
very pretty suite on the second floor. It had a small sitting
area/kitchen, a bedroom with a wood burning fireplace, and a bathroom
with a big jacuzzi tub (but no shower, which was really the only
negative about this room). The room also features a “star filled sky”
ceiling, which we discovered when we turned out our lights the first
night. Very romantic.

The hotel has built a spa facility on the ground floor of the house
which showcases a beautiful jacuzzi, sauna, and rain shower system.
Couples can reserve the whole area to themselves for an hour at a time
for no charge. We were able to snag a free hour and relaxed in the
jacuzzi for a while on our first day.

The dining area of this inn is beautiful at night, colorful upholstered
chairs, soft lights, and a harpist completes this romantic experience
(though my husband expressed some uneasiness with the pop leanings of
the harpist's repertoire)! And the food was wonderful. We ate there on
our first night, and enjoyed our meal immensely. The strawberry risotto
was amazing!

Breakfast each day consisted of meats, cheese, pastry, fruit and cereal.
It was included in the incredibly low price of our room, 180 euro a
night, but did get a bit boring after about the third day.

From Tuoro as our base for four days, we visited Montefalco, Deruta,
Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio and Cortona, as well as going on a truffle
hunt/cooking class in nearby Citerna.

Besides the lovely meal we had at Capricci di Merion, we also enjoyed
dining at il Teatro in Tuoro, L’Alchimista in Montefalco, L’Antico
Forziere near Deruta (one of the best meals of the entire trip), and La
Bucaccia in Cortona. We’ve done an entire day-by-day trip report which
give a lot more information about the towns and restaurants we visited,
which you can see here: http://willtravelforfoodandwine.blogspot.com/

Loved our 4 nights here. This hotels oozes with charm and history. We stayed on the top floor in the Moliere room. The bathroom was clean and modern (just wish there was more counter top space, but that's a challenge in most European hotels.) Our bed was comfortable and our balcony was private. We had a view to the lake, but only if we stood up. There's a lift to take you upstairs and a nice spa area on the 1st floor. (Hot tub, sauna, programmable shower and solarium, i.e. tanning booth?) You request private time in the spa area with the staff. (They can also arrange for a masseuse.) What a hard working staff they have, too! We were particularly impressed by Michael, who waited on us during dinners and checked us out in the evening (early flight out of Rome the next morning.) Breakfast was amazing with breads/pastries/cakes baked on site, meats, cheeses & yogurt. However, as good as breakfast was, dinner was even better! One of our all around best meals! Dining area is so romantic. This would be a lovely place to spend your honeymoon or anniversary. To be honest, however, I was a little disappointed by the location when we first drove up. I think I had it in my mind that it was more secluded. Don't let me detract anyone from staying here because of that. It is outside the old part of the Tuoro and is super peaceful and quiet. It does have neighbors in the back of the hotel behind the yard and pool area, however, so it's not completely isolated as I somehow had in my mind from their website. The town of Tuoro sul Trasimeno is very close to the Tuscan border, so we were able to explore Cortona & Montepulicano easily and it a quick drive to Assisi and the other hill towns of Umbria. The A1 connector is maybe 2 miles away, so it makes touring easy.

Charming. Beautiful. Picturesque. Quaint. Attentive. Romantic. Relaxing. Panaromic. Peaceful. Pampered. Helpful. Friendly.
Tried to sum up this place in one word, but it was impossible. My husband and I loved this place and would return in a heartbeat. The staff was so very accomodating and helpful. Francesca helped us with day trip ideas and was fluent in English. The views from this hilltop were beautiful. I highly recommend this hotel for relaxation, romance, and beautiful views. And the building itself is so very charming. Absolutely loved this hotel!

We selected I Capricci from reviews on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed. We had 14 people and took 5 rooms. The hotel has beautiful grounds, a nice swimming pool and comfortable rooms - ask for one with a balcony that looks out over the Umbrian countryside. You can walk into town for an espresso or gelato and to use the internet. Francesca at the desk speaks English and will help you plan daily excursions and give you tips about what to do. She also makes a great capuccino. We ate dinner at the hotel twice and it is easily the best restaurant around with different and interesting food presented artfully. The location is perfect for daytrips around Umbria and Tuscany with a price less than Tuscan hotels. It is 15 minutes to the train to go into Florence for the day. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone going to Italy. We had an age range from 10-65 and everyone loved the hotel and the staff.

We stayed here for two nights of our honeymoon trip and wished we could have stayed longer. This place is darling. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Our room included darling decor with lake view, kitchen and sitting area, seperate bedroom and large bathroom. This place is very quiet with beautiful grounds. My husband especially loved the small elevator lift to transport luggage up to our third floor room. The restaurant was a wonderful experience including delicious food, wine and harp music. This is a must do for those looking for a romantic stay near Umbria or Cortona. It is a bit hard to find but worth the effort. From hwy exit head up hillside, going through very small town, until you are in residential area. Look for large park on the right of the road with bench seats facing the street. After this park you will see a hotel sign on the right (high up on a pole above a "50" sign) where you should immediately turn right. It looks like an alley, but really a street. A short distance to another sign turning right to get to the hotel.

We stayed 5 nights at Capricci di Merion and enjoyed every minute of it. The property and setting are first-rate, the staff are exceptionally friendly and the food is extraordinary - as a restaurant, it is clearly a popular spot based on the number of people arriving from elsewhere each evening for dinner.

The location (Tuoro) is ideal for exploring northern Umbria and southern Tuscany, i.e. Perugia, Lake Trasimeno, Cortona, etc. However, it's a bit of drive to areas of interest in southern Umbria (Orvieto, Spello). Tuoro is also on the main train line so it's easy to get to Perugia, Florence, etc. using this method.

The hotel is a little tricky to find; here's my advice: get to Tuoro off the main road to Perugia (the Perugia-Bertolle highway, I think it's the SS75); go into the centre of the village, pass the little wooded park on your right and - just at the end of this area - take the tiny little hill down to your right.

Any gripes? Well, a couple of extra pillows on the bed would have been nice and the shower was one of those jacuzzi things that rarely have enough power to be worth the effort. But - these are minor minor gripes. This place is amazing....go stay there!!

This is an absolutely beautiful inn. I think because it is located in a small hill town, Tuoro, it seems to have escaped the radar of most American tourists. It seems to have mostly Italian guests. I almost hate to write about it because it is like a little hidden gem. The inn's rooms are beautiully decorated and clean. The staff goes out of their way to assist you although admittedly the language barrier can be an issue when trying to ask about places to see and restaurants to visit. We were given very helpful information from a tourist information office at the nearby Lake Trasimeno where the person at the desk was fluent in English. It is also short car ride to Perugia, Assisi and Cortona. The hotel also has a first class restaurant which served us the best food that we had in Italy. It has a swimming pool with a whirlpool and in the inn itself there is a room with a hot tub, sauna, etc. that you can rent by yourselves by the hour at a nominal charge. It was wonderful to be served a bottle of wine while sitting around the pool on a beautiful June day. It was also very reasonably priced in relation to other hotels that we have stayed at in Italy, considering the beauty and amenities that it offers. It is immaculate both inside and out, incredibly romantic hotel and overall it is a wonderful place to stay.
