“Lovely family day out”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

The owner and his staff were very friendly and knowledgable. The trip started with a tour of the stables where the owner told the history of the rescue horses, younger members of the group were able to collect the food buckets and give them to the horses. After this the children could have a go on a mini cart pulled by a shetland pony. We then watched a horse being saddled up ready to give some cart rides. There was an opportunity to have a go at driving a tractor and go on a tractor ride. The children enjoyed doing some groming and petting some rabbits. There was a nice childrens play area and we had lunch from the onsite cafe. All in all it was god value for money, however as they had experienced a lot of rain we were glad we had taken our wellies!!!

“Plenty to see and do for young and not so young alike”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

We spent several hours today at the Dorset Heavy Horse centre. The owner was very hands on and his attitude to visitors of all ages was brilliant. The animals are marvellous - well cared for and many have fascinating histories. The additional effort taken in terms of activities such as carriage and tractor / trailer rides cannot be faulted. Add on, for the children, a petting area with smaller animals, and the opportunity to drive a tractor, and this centre truly makes a great day out.

“A lovely time and great value”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

At less than £8 each we certainly had our money's worth and learnt quite a lot too. Enjoyed the horses, the ride in the buggy, tractor riding, even the mystery tractor and trailer ride around the car park (fields too muddy). A nice friendly atmosphere and lots of animals to see, great little cafe and relaxed pace. Lots for kids to do too. Well worth a visit, spent 4 great hours there. Even the drizzle did not dampen things. Doing great work looking after rescued horses too.

“A day out we will remember and treasure”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

We happened on the Dorset Heavy Horse Centre while searching the internet for a place to see Shire horses while in the UK from Australia. It took us 2 1/2 hours to get there from Exeter and was well worth it!
We were instantly charmed by the horses in their stalls around the courtyard. Each has such character and hand-feeding them was a lovely way to say "Hello". We had a ride on the horse and cart driven by Phil, who runs the centre and is a wealth of information on each horse, heavy horse history and their plight of endangerment as well as the history of the Romany people.
There were also goats, pigs, donkeys, elpacas, rabbits, gineau pigs, ferrets, fowls and the little horses too. The children could groom the miniature horses with supervision and pet the rabbits. There was tractor driving and rides on a tractor pulled cart too.
There were educational talks at intervals, including my favourite, introduction of a number of the heavy horses as they were brought out to meet us. We also had good chats with the volunteers who help out for the love of what goes on there. Inspiring folk.
We had a delicious lunch at the cafe which is themed , of course, in cowboys and indians style.
We were really impressed. It was so good to know this centre was about rescuing these wonderful horses and taking care of them to promote recovery or providing a gentle place for the rest of their days.
A heart-warming experience and one of our best memories of our trip to the UK 2012. Heartily recommend a visit by any and all! Love to have one in Australia too!
