“Expectations of a great view...”

Lake View Hotel creates expectations but what is seen of the lake so it is very small. Nevertheless, it's an okey hotel and surroundings. When we arrived late in the evening was the staff welcomed us and gave us juice. The rooms were were quite small but there are certainly different sizes. We slept well and it was clean and tidy.

I was made to believe that the Lake View Hotel was the best hotels in Mbarara Town and therefore made a bee-line to the hotel the moment I arrived in Mbarara.

On arrival I asked for a room with all the necessities one would expect in a standard hotel room, being: hot water, clean room, etc. which I was promised.

At reception it was mentioned that my room would cost &175 a day which I accepted although I found it a bit steep, looking at the interior and surroundings of the reception area.

Walking into the suite I immediately noticed that this is not a $175 a night apartment, but rather an $80 a night room. No lamp shades, dirty windows, no view onto a lake but onto a filthy kitchen roof and back yard, a mesh sliding door that was broken, etc. Although I personally do not pay for my accommodation I decided that this is not worth $175 and requested to see another room with a price tag of $85 a day.

Once again what was presented was very dissapointing – this time a real dungeon!

A terrible view of the same old dirty roof and back yard, ( and this place is called “Lake View Hotel”?????) dirty walls, filthy windows, floors not cleaned properly, rubbish on top of the wardrobe, no toilet paper holder, a gap between the doorframe and the wall for anyone to peak through, no lamp shades but bare globes suspended from the ceiling, handle missing on wardrobe door and bare planks as shelf’s in the wardrobe, no hair dryer, no tea tray, no safe deposit box, poor TV selection.
But, because this was the best hotel in town I decided to stay.

Once settled down, the problems started, the electricity supply tends to switch off very regular, although here is a generator on site it takes some time to get the thing started. If there is water available, it’s brown!!!!??? Warm water is also something one needs to appreciate, not always available!

Breakfast is also nothing to get excited about. Except for a fair selection of fruit available, the rest is very disappointing. Even brown bread is a luxury, if it’s available be thankful! Beacon is apparently available on demand. Service is also very poor, if you want tea or coffee, you pour your own, there are many waiters hanging around but none would offer to pour you a cup.

Please take note that when you settle your bill, they do accept credit cards but charge 8% banking fees, the last 3 months I used my credit card in Uganda on many occasions – including paying my hotel bills – but not once had to pay banking fees, never mind 8%!

I was made to believe that the Embassy and Acacia Hotels have much more to offer, check it out before you check in to the Lake View Hotel.

Room Tip: Wish I could!

For three adults traveling together, we were given a "family room," which was actually adjoining twin rooms. This was at a lower price than getting two twin rooms. We were first shown rooms on the ground floor, and they were unacceptable due to the strong odor of something that smelled like bleach. The staff person then said the rooms in that section had just been fumigated, so he showed us the abovementioned family room on the third floor (fourth floor by American counting, and with no elevators, a long walk up and down). It was a good thing there were only three of us because one of the four beds was hard as a rock. The other three were comfortable. There was a small night table between the two beds in each room but one headboard spanned the whole distance. This made it impossible to use the mosquito nets above each bed, but fortunately, there were no mosquitoes. Overall, the room was adequate for one night and the service was fine. The morning breakfast buffet was very good.

Room Tip: Check out the room before you accept it. Quality is inconsistent.

We stayed at another hotel but used this restaurant twice for evening meals. The staff were very helpful and the menu was extensive. The food was very good especially the fish and curries. We would look to stay here next time depending on the price.

I've stayed at this hotel for the past 3 years. It is very clean, and nice. The free breakfast buffet is included and is good. There is always hot running water, and free wifii was an upgrade this year. The staff is friendly and very helpful. There is an awesome spa area where you can get a great massage and pedicure as well. The price for a single was about 60 dollars. It's safe, and very nice, especially compared to other places that I have experienced in Uganda.

Room Tip: I've always stayed on the bottom floor, and it's always been nice and quiet, except if there...

If you're out in SW Uganda and stop in Mbarara, this is almost definitely the hotel that you want to be at. Unfortunately, the hotel is very popular and so most major functions and parties take place here. Almost every evening I was here there were large celebrations outside with incredibly loud music. Because there is no A/C you need to have the windows open at least a little which can make it hard to sleep. The only other disadvantage of this hotel is that it is not near the city center at all. So unless you have access to a car, you won't be going anywhere once you're at the hotel. However, the service was fine, the food was decent and the rooms were comfortable. Just remember to bring some ear plugs!

What else can you do in Mbarara, they have you over a barrel. Room is nice. Plumbing problems prevail, food is passible, customer service is poor as they know you have no where else to go. Watch your conversion rates when paying the bill, they attempted to change it up from our arrival agreement.

Room Tip: Ensure you get a room in the new wing of the facility.
