Owner description: Majestic 14th-century castle located on a rugged cliff overlooking the coast.

Dunnottar Castle is one of the most impressive castle ruins I've been able to see. And Scotland has done a great job maintaining the grounds. There are a number of small trails to hike around that can give you some pretty fantastic views of the castle.

Our one complaint was that when we went, the winds were so strong that they closed down going into the castle ruins itself. However the trip to see the castle was still worth it even without seeing and traversing the inside. The coastline and views of the castle itself were just astounding.

Beautiful, the grounds and surroundings are amazing. Would have been better if there were more plaques up to read more about the castle but other than that, it is fantastic for a trip out on a sunny day!

Extremely beautiful castle ruins and fantastic views of the crashing seas against the cliffs. Sea birds circle and nest on the rocks - mesmerising to watch. Well worth an extra hour detour!

It is hard to describe the beauty and majesty of Dunnottar Castle. The vistas of nature, both land and sea, will simply take your breath away. Well worth the drive and walk from parking area to castle precincts which is an on-going restoration project. Nearby Stonehaven has a rugged, typical Scottish strand (beach). Check out the local pubs for lunch or tea.
