Lovely ruined castle that is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. Its a walk from the car park and a steep decent and climb up to castle - but its worth it if you are able.

If you enjoy walking then its worth a try .The route to castle is usually a path (Left) from the war memorial site .The day we went it was closed .The other route you could take to reach the castle is to take the main road down to the memorial site keep walking till you see the castle entrance on to your left .

It was like time travel! It is so worth the visit and the tiny fee, the castle feels so rich with history and has the most breathtaking views. It was cold and windy but my husband and I couldn't turn our backs on such an unforgettable treasure. It is a place I will never forget, and hope to return to again someday. Honestly, a once in a lifetime sort of experience. Go! It is the perfect place to get lost.

The castle ruins are surrounded on three sides by sea and accessed via a steep set of stairs (not that many). Within the castle grounds you can explore many of the old buildings (largely ruined though a few restored). There are toilets in the grounds of the castle but no refreshments. There is a refreshment van near the car park by the castle. You can either drive to the castle and park and walk about 400m to the steps to the entrance or you can walk to the castle along the coastal path from Stonehaven. This was officially closed when we walked it due to a landslip but could still be used (as many were). From Stonehaven harbour it is about a 30 minute walk to the castle.

Dunnotar castle is the most impressive of all ruins. Well worth the walk to reach the site and the views are stunning. Take your time, don't be in a hurry as there is a lot of history associated with this medieval fortress. The guides are very knowledgeable and this is truly a delight. The nearby beach is also worth a visit and if the day is clear you can take a picnic and enjoy the whole day in the area.
