We had the 6 course dinner at the Royal before going to the simple minds concert in the square and the food and service was superb - they were so busy with people that night but the staff did an excellent job to deliver a high quality service. Would definitely go back and highly recommendable

Excellent value and Well done!

Booked a year in advance for Hogmonay at the Royal as a party of 14 and was impressed by the attention of the staff who could not have been more helpful. As the hotel was in the centre of the celebrations it was very busy the service was first class. The bedrooms were adequate and functional although a new carpet in the corridoor would help. Breakfast was very good with a good choice from the menu served with a smile. All in all we enjoyed our 3 nights stay on a very busy time of the year and hope to return in the future

Had an early dinner on a weeknight in this restaurant. There weren't that many tables available so we had to settle for a booth with a high chair on the end of the table, which was okay except for the fact that every time someone opened the front door a really cold draft came, chilling us all including our baby. However after we had asked them to do something about it they did try to fix it but couldn't in the end cause then people wouldn't get in and out..at least they tried.
The food was okay, nothing to complain about but nothing special. I asked for vegetarian fajitas which wasn't on the menu but they made it without any hassle. My partner had a burger which was good enough but nothing special. We ordered a children's pizza with baked beans for our baby but received pizza with chips. We asked the waiter for beans again but never got any in the end...we brought it up when he cleared the table and he apologised a lot and took the child's meal off the bill. So I guess even though the staff didn't seem the most competent they were very apologetic and took money off our bill.
So all in all it was decent and good enough just not great. However they could put more vegetarian options on the menu as they only had one (risotto).

Hotel was booked through my work's trip service, had hoped to stay elsewhere but all fully booked. The Royal is undergoing some refurbishment and scaffolding to the front obscures the hotel name making it difficult to locate. Check in is at the bar which I only knew due to looking at reviews here. Was shown where free parking is located and then taken to room which was recently refurbished however was quite small, all clean and tidy with en-suite and toiletries. Ate in the bar for dinner which was reasonably priced, yes the chef does shout NEXT when meals are ready to serve. Breakfast was a generous portion plus cereals, fruit, yoghurts, bread for toasting, croissants and other sweet buns, lovely. Don't know why but didn't sleep too well, probably me rather than the room.

Room Tip: Avoid 16 if you're looking for some space.

Hubby and I stayed for the weekend with toddler. We were on a special deal after a fluff up on our summer booking.... got a big room with sea views and huge bed, really comfy, but a bit soulless.. Heating was erratic, and by the end of the weekend we still hadn't managed to get enough hot water for a wash let alone a shower....

I have to add that the temporary floor covering and lack of guests on the Friday and pictures on the walls of the long corridor was a bit spooky (think child on tricycle)....

....all more than made up for by the magnificent setting for breakfast (imagine Miss Marple meets Poirot) with service to match....ty all...and the proximity to the beach.

Ate in the downstairs restaurant on the Saturday night. He had the steak pie, I had the game. The food was grown-up fare that was comfortingly yummy. Warm atmosphere and attentive service. We thoroughly enjoyed.

I came away thinking the hotel had a wee bit of an identity crisis given our mixed experiences, but given that it is under renovation, now might be the time to get a bargain. Hopefully when finished it will live up to its potential.

First time in Stonehaven and the Royal Hotel. We were guiding a tour group around Scotland. Enjoyable experience. Staff were very helpful, rooms good but a little small, some with nice view of the North sea. First impression was a little disconcerting but the staff made up for any misconception. Would stay there again. group rate was a little high.

The outside appearance of this Hotel does not do it justice. Easy access to Aberdeen by train or road. We stayed in a lovely room, on the small side, but adequate, comfortable and very clean. The breakfast was excellent, served in a large airy room on first floor . We ate evening meals in the bar area. The choice and quality of meals and beers was very good with excellent friendly service. We recommend the Fish & Chips! We could not fault our stay and would definitely recommend it others.

Room Tip: Sea view is worth the extra cost
