Service poor.. beer badly kept..and limited choice, goodness knows how the rooms are..in short, a mess! Has potential being in centre of town but a noisy place to be. Food average and dirty tables. Toilets could be cleaner!

My boyfriend and i booked a double room with a sea view, paid a deposit over the phone as we were told it was booked. When we arrived on Saturday, we were taken up to a room with 2 single beds instead of a double. We did have a sea view but the window was nailed shut and as it was 21° we needed an open window.

We were then moved to another room with a double bed but the view was horrendous. Just rooftops. I ran the taps in the bathroom and they rattled and made a loud screetching noise which vibrated through the floor to the bed.

After being asked to move for a 2nd time to a 3rd room we were extremely annoyed and tempted to try a different hotel. Luckily the 3rd room had perfectly working plumbing, windows and a double bed.

The walls are paper thin, the corridor makes a lot of noise when walked through and i didn't find the staff to be overly friendly. The breakfast was good however, and the woman in the breakfast room on Sunday morning was very polite, friendly & helpful.

We definetly want to go visit Stonehaven again but we will not be going back to the Royal Hotel.

Been here twice now for food, and both times food has been excellent! Nothing to complain about there. Just one or two little things would make the service a bit better.... Staff aren't overly chatty and some not even polite. The chef shouts something along the line of 'next' from the kitchen each time food is ready..... This made us laugh. For all it would be to have a bell or something. Staff aren't in uniform... Some wear suitable clothing but others were in clothing you wouldn't normally see waitresses or bar staff wearing. None of this effect the food tho, so not really much of a complaint

We stayed in Royal Hotel for just one night in order to see a little bit more of Stonehaven. Luckily we had read some reviews beforehand so we knew that the check-in was done in the bar instead of the reception desk which seemed to be completely useless. There is a pub downstairs which was rather noisy but luckily our room was quite far away from it which meant peace and quiet or so we thought in the beginning. We stayed in a double room which was clean and tidy with simple decorations and a partly sea view. However, the room was rather small and moving around was not very easy with two people in the room. The bed was big and cozy and the big flat-screen TV kept us entertained in the evening.

The room did not really have any space to put your stuff on besides the little chair in the corner. There were hangers and small drawers but few more chairs in the big empty corner would have been useful.

During the night we realized that the walls were as thin as paper and you could hear people walk in the corridor, flush their toilets and talk in the next room. On the bright side, you could also hear the waves.

A full cooked Scottish breakfast plus a cold buffet was included in the room price and it was very nice but we had to wait a long time after ordering it before it was served. The service was polite but not the friendliest.

Altogether, the hotel is suitable for a short stay and do not forget to pack your earplugs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room far away from the pub and with a sea view.

This is a busy pub with a long corridor of rooms, complete with squeaky floorboards and institutional beige paint. The room is totally dull and soulless, not a picture on the wall, not a Gideon Bible, to even a fire escape map. Wifi connection does not work in the rooms. Bathroom was not as clean as it could be and the hot water takes ages and ages to come through, if at all. I tried to have a bath but gave up. No hair dryer or other luxuries, not even a box of tissues. I ordered supper in the bar and it took half an hour to arrive. Glass of wine comes in its own individual bottle. On a positive note, breakfast was good, served with a cheerful greeting and smile.

I have just completed a 6 night stay at the Royal Hotel with a group of 17 golfers from France. This is the 11th version of this trip, and the first time that I have taken a hotel that did not have an STB rating. In December 2012 we agreed terms by E mail but I did not receive formal confirmation of receipt of my deposit and of the terms of the booking until late February which caused some anxiety, but communication then improved dramatically - thank you Gregor. When we arrived Gregor was on hand to distribute the rooms as there is no formal receptionist but I was aware of this - all questions are dealt with at the bar. The rooms are mainly small but all have been recently refurbished to a good standard, the beds were comfortable, eveything was spotless, but a little more storage space would have been useful. The corridor was a little tired and noise could be a problem but not in our case as we had taken most of the hotel. The staff were excellent in all departments, special thanks to Kevin who was totally unflappable. The package included a 3 course evening meal and we always had a choice between two starters and two main courses - the dessert was fixed and the weakest part of the menu. The choice of wine was limited but was perfectly adequate and reasonably priced. Overall then my group was very happy with its stay at this hotel which is well situated near the sea in a delightful little town - the hotel has no car park but there was plently of parking space in nearby streets. One suggestion - the management should stop asking customers to pay in advance. This had never been mentioned until we arrived and could have caused a serious problem had the idea not been dropped. I had never encountered this before and it sends all the wrong signals.

Room Tip: Rooms 11 & 12 have stunning sea views, room 16 has a pleasant view over some roof tops to the ba...

This afternoon me and my other half popped in for a lunch on my break at work. We were seated quickly and given drinks fast. Service was ok however needs alot more professional touches. Music was up way to loud. One staff member was walking around with her phone, cigarettes and lighter in hand while working and some cutlery was not cleaned properly.

We ordered very simple dishes. One spaghetti carbonara and one chicken chorizo carbonara.

What should have been a simple dish with nice flavours were the worst i have had. Pasta slightly over cooked and not al dente. Sauce was creamy but no flavour. My dish (chorizo) had different sized cuts of chorizo. Some small some a lot bigger. There was not a lot of it and worst of all the chorizo had no flavour. Chorizo does not need long cooking. Cooking it in the cream sauce will release its flavours into the cream making it flavourful. The chef failed to do this. There was no garnish and they were very boring to eat.

We had to wait 25 minutes for these dishes which only takes 15 from scratch. The venue was not busy so no excuse.

The dressing on our side salad was nice but not enough to make up for other mistakes.

Needs a lot of improvement and some redecoration on outside.

Not value for money.
