A cold, wet, dark, blustery evening - looking forward to a welcoming, warm, cosy place & a nice meal.

Plus points - great location on the harbour front. Good food value. Some unusual choices. Pleasant dining room with not too much ‘marine’ décor. Interesting menu. Pleasing, relaxed service. Good food. However, there were only 4 others dining, so not much ’atmosphere'.

Minus points - wine is a bit expensive - were brought the wrong one at first, but changed without fuss. Dining room is upstairs - rather a long climb up! Difficult for those with limited mobility. No table cloths & only paper serviettes. It was just warm enough, on a cold, stormy night. The radiator next to our table wasn’t on.

Food was beautifully fresh and well cooked. I had pork fillet with black pudding, it was lovely and my wife had the fish kebab which had at least three different kinds of fish on it. My son had kids fish and chips and it too was a good sized portion and a beautiful piece of fish.

Not a massive menu but there was enough to meet everyone's needs.

We will go back again

Loved the atmosphere of the Marine Hotel bar. It was warm and cozy with a great view over the harbour. There were a few vegetarian choices, including a delicious red onion and goat cheese tart with a cherry tomato salad. My friend had fish and chips which she fell in love with. We both shared the Pecan Sticky Toffee for dessert, not bad but it's hard to say it's the best when there are so many wonderful ones in Scotland. The bar is well stocked and the staff were some of the friendliest I've met since moving here. Aberdeen restaurants' staff don't compare to the attentiveness of those at the Marine Hotel. All in all we each had a beer, a meal and dessert for only £40. Definitely worth a visit!

I have visited the marine a number of times recently over the festive period and cannot comment highly enough: Great views over the harbour from a variety of window seats, staff attentive, helpful and friendly. An excellent choice of food with a wide variety catering for all tastes and a huge selection of beers (over 150) with recommendations for selecting to accompany your menu choice. I can particularly recommend the scallops and the spicy prawns as starters and the fillet steak more than met my own and fellow diners expectations with a variety of cooking requirements from rare to med-well all were cooked to perfection. I have lived in Stonehaven 22 years and this is definately the place to go.

The well stocked and atmospheric bar downstairs is also the perfect place to relax and finish off the evening.

Reasonably priced, high quality fare, backed by superb service and attention to detail. The Marine Hotel is located overlooking the harbour, with the restaurant on the first floor. Parking can be a bit of a pain.
The restaurant menu is wide ranging, with lots of fish and other local treats. There is a specials menu too. The smoked haddock tart starter is excellent. The mussels arrive in a clever enamelled bucket with a lid that doubles as a place to put your discarded mussel shells. These too are excellent. The mains are all generous portions, and the quality is excellent. In our group, the only small complaint was the venison was a bit tough. The steak was perfect, as was the pheasant.
A feature of the menu is a matching beer suggestion with every item. There are over 150 beers available, and the hotel has its own brewery out back! There are even beer suggestions with the desserts. If I hadn't been driving I might have tried some!
My only issue is with the toilets - the restaurant shares a toilet with the downstairs bar, and when it gets busy (Hogmanay) there are people waiting, some of them even into the entrance of the restaurant. It would be nice for the restaurant to have access to its own toilet.
Nevertheless, I can thoroughly recommend the Marine Hotel, and will be back!
