“Surprised on the upside”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2013 via mobile

Attended a wedding nearby and stayed for two nights at the Marine Hotel. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, our room had an excellent view of the harbour and had modern, clean facilities. The breakfast included was very satisfying. We can't comment on the food otherwise as we did not have lunch or dinner at the hotel, but the bar is very lively with a friendly atmosphere and a superb selection of beers and whiskies. I would definitely recommend this for those on a budget.

The Marine usually has a good selection of real ales on the go. It is a great place to have a pint on a sunny summer afternoon or evening and can get very busy on weekend afternoons with the bar and the harbour side often mobbed with visitors. No doubt the place does very well out of that. Perhaps too well, because the management seems to forget about it's local regulars who like a pint of a winter evening. The last couple of weeks we have been in, the place has been absolutely FREEZING. So if you want to enjoy a nice snug pint one evening, this is definitely NOT the place to go to.

I recently stayed at the Marine Hotel whilst heading back down from up north. When I read the website I was excited about the location, the food, the beer selection and the rooms so I was happy to pay that little bit extra.
After reading previous reviews I knew to head for the first floor restaurant to check in, but whilst climbing the stairs I was disappointed by the dirty carpets and they area didn't smell too nice.
After booking in I was shown to a large room with a lovely view over the harbour, I should have been really impressed but the carpet looked dirty and the shower door would close properly and I had to physically kick it to open it to get out of the shower. I eat in the bar and the Haddock was possibly the best that I'd ever tasted and the beer selection did not disappoint, six hand pumps and a huge list of bottled Belgian beer. I also really enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the bar but again the seating area looked shabby.
I was aware that breakfast was continental but it was really disappointed as there were no proper rolls or bread only brioche rolls which I had the feeling had been out the previous morning as they tasted very processed.
The Marine Hotel has got so much going for it; the location, the bar and food so it was disappointing that it is overlooking the basics of keeping the place tidy and a nice breakfast. First impressions are really important and it was the dirty stair and the stains on the bedroom carpet that were the first things that I saw. My first and last impressions very really poor but the middle bit was really good.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a harbour view

I have been to the marine mant times and enjoy a drink in the bar downstairs but this review concerns the restaurant upstairs. We went to the marine at 6pm on a Sunday. We were a party of six. The were 2 other tables already there. One of 4 and another of six so the restaurant was not busy. It took ten minutes from sitting down until we had our drink order taken. After ordering food it took 1 hour before it was on the table. During the wait for the food our drinks were empty and none of the staff seemed to notice empty glasses. There were plenty of staff but they were not very attentive. During the hour wait for our food nobody came to apologise that we were waiting so long. The food when it arrived was good but nothing special that justified the wait.

My husband and I stayed at the Marine Hotel in September and had the top floor corner room which has views in two directions. The room was up three flights of stairs and the staff kindly carried our bags up. Besides the great views that we like so much, the room had a great bathtub and is the only hotel we stayed in on this Scotland trip that had real coffee and a great coffee maker. What a pleasure to have morning coffee in bed enjoying a fabulous view of Stonehaven Harbour! The continental breakfast was really good - smoked salmon, eggs, toast, lots of fruit and cereals. The bar on the main floor is lovely and fun - we watched the British win the Ryder Cup and cheered with the local folk. We also dined in the excellent restaurant on the second floor overlooking the harbour the first night and then came back again the next night because it was so good. Great menu with interesting local seafood and game.

Room Tip: Top floor garret room with a great view.

Slept in the room called Lucifer, right up the top of the hotel, parking was on the sea front, got my bags in after driving up from near milton keynes and working in the area.
Food was Steamed Shetland mussels in white wine sauce for starter, never tried them and really great, came with some bread and butter, the butter was soft and not the usual frozen brick you get at most restaurants. Main course was Hot Smoked Salmon, looked nice but could have done with more potatoes, sweet was Panna Cotta. Washed down with a local real ale and a pint of hoegaarden. Cost was £32. Went back upstairs, had the power shower which was a great pressure, nice wide shower bit, could have done with a soap dispenser within the shower...
