“Unique taste”

I regularly buy takeaways from Alwar.
The quail-roast is excellent.
The gravy taste is unique.

The parotha broken up and soaked in their gravy is to die for!

The huge crowd in the evenings is a problem when buying takeaways.
Wish they have a seperate counter with a token like queue system to make the buying process easier.

“The pioneers in fried Parottas...”

Alwar Night Club, the name might give us a lot of imaginations and even confuse us. But, this is the naming trends in the town of Tuticorin for restaurants or locally called hotels which only operate in the evenings. So, no more imaginations. Being a foodie and with a particular interest on that traditional, food of the land type, all my enquiries for the best and oldest local food shop were directed only to this place. People I spoke to said, these were the people who pioneered in the deep frying of parottas (normally tawa fried) and this is what went on to become the famous Virudhunagar Parotta. This is a 3 decade old shop, a very simple, small hotel setting serving oil fried parottas, types of dosas and non veg gravies. But, they are so busy and sought after. The restaurant opens at about 6.00 PM and start the train orders non stop. There is always a queue for parcels, to carry to the trains and maybe to their home next day, which lasts till 7.15 PM. Then, they say the private buses orders till 9.00 PM. They do not entertain a parcel of just parottas and plain gravy, it needs to be accompanied by their famous chicken or mutton or pigeon fries.

A chat with the founder/owner Mr.Alwar, makes it clear why this place is so successful. The sheer passion he has to serve delicious food shows obviously. He claims, starting from the maida flour to the oil, everything he buys is agmark or the first quality. He personally oversees the way food is prepared and served or packed. The menu is not very lengthy, just parottas, dosas, idlies and accompaniments. But it is nearly a queue to get a place or buy a parcel. Most items get over by 10.00 Pm and they close at 10.30 PM.

It is advisable to pack your stuff and take it to your place of stay and have. You might not be very comfortable in sitting in that hot restaurant with the smell of the oil and with all the noise and chaos around. But a visit to Tuticorin or any place nearby would not be complete without a dinner in this awesome place. The oil parottas seem to melt in the mouth and the spicy gravies they provide are mouth watering. Try once and we will remember it lifetime.
