“Cecina disaster”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2006

We booked this property through Owners Direct and found that the aerial pictures were misleading, and that we were lead to believe on the website that there were only four properties available - there were actually twenty. The facilities were inadequate for the number of people staying at the property; the queue for the washing machine for example was 24 hours long. The feeling at the property is very unlike any in Italy we have experienced in 10 years. The pool was cloudy, the grass non-existent with ant colonies, and the tables numbered so that each apartment can sit at the correct one. The owners are generally unwilling to help with complaints due to the fact that they demand full payment before arrival and so do little to assist quests. This led to a general feeling of resentment amongst long suffering and tolerant guests. Significantly there were no Italians staying here.

The accomodation was quite basic and lacked the basic requirements for a comfortable holiday. The grounds of the farmhouse were unkempt , the grass was not watered and weeds were growing everywhere. The area where the pool was situated behind the farm house was very unattractive and uncared for, the pool itself was a hazard for young children as it did not have a shallow end and umbrellas were not provided as stated on the web site . We found that nothing was provided in the accomodation on our arrival not even a toilet roll and all beds had to be made up by ourselves with the bed linen which we had hired.

During our stay (July 06), we were disappointed with the facilities on-site, the materials provided, and the general lay-out of the 'farmhouse'. In addition, I would consider the swimming pool to be a hazard for young children as there is NO shallow end, and there were hard tile edges around the pool. Even some of the adults staying at the same time as us couldn't use the pool as they were not comfortable out of their depth. The farmhouse is extremely large, holding something like 20 apartments, so that privacy is not a given for most. There are only two balconies, so (apart from the few apartments on the ground floor), most cannot sit out at their own door in the evening, which is not ideal if you have young children. You can also guess that if you are on the first or second floor up, you are faced with an inconvenient trudge back and forth when you wish to use the garden BBQ. The grounds were not watered so that the grass around the pool area was dried out, and it had 6-inch weeds scattered throughout, so that the pool did not look well-kept or attractive. The area which someone said was advertised as a 5-a-side football pitch was in fact an uneven corner of the field at the back of the house! When we arrived, there was nothing in the apartment (except the sheets which we had to put on the un-made beds ourselves!) - there was no milk, tea/coffee sachets, bottled water, soap, shampoo sachets, bread, or even spare/extra toilet rolls left as a ‘welcome pack’.

My partner and I spent the middle two weeks of May here this year. The first thing that you notice is how beautiful the setting is but it does become apparent quite quickly that the distances to the beach and the town/village closest to the farm on the owners website are misleading. You could not survive here without a car which you need to get there in the first place, and while the best way to see Tuscany is to drive, we were hoping to be within walking distance of a restaurant for our evening meal. Although the studio apartments are a good size and easily maintained, they are very basic and we were very glad that we brought along mini speakers for our disc man! As for the beaches, they are a good 15 minutes drive away at Cecina di Mare, also be aware that the shops in Montescudaio and Cecina close between 1pm and 4.30pm, most of the restaurants in both places close from 2pm until 5.00pm and no supermarkets open after 1pm on a Sunday in either place.
