We were pleasantly surprised with the restaurant area and the cellar door. The pinots were good too. If you are driving up the Tamar it is just on the northern outskirts of Launceston and you might think it is not worth the trouble stopping. You would be wrong.

“Great lunch”

It was one of my shortlisted places to have lunch and we were not disappointed. Service from 1 particular waiter was great. Not the other. Had risotto and it was heavenly.

“100% quality fare!”

A truly fantastic culinary experience for lunch today! We ordered Tasmanian oysters natural as entrée followed by Duck Pie with Shiitake mushrooms for Gillian and a Cape Grim Eye Fillet steak (medium rare) for Terry. Dessert consisted of a Chocolate and Pistachio cake and a Lemon Polenta with Almond cake both served with King Island double cream and Raspberry Coulis. Our wine was a delicious 2008 Velo Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Our meal in two words: culinary rhapsody! The Duck flavours were absolutely succulent and matched the Shiitake mushrooms oh so well. The Duck Pie pastry was delicate and perhaps the best pie we've ever eaten! Terry's Cape Grim Eye Fillet was cooked to perfection and exactly as asked for; medium rare. This main event was nicely placed on potato mash surrounded by a red jus style gravy with a serving of Al Dente Snow Peas. A nice touch was the crispy bacon pieces and roasted capsicum containing ricotta cheese. Velo's Cab Sav was an awesome wine to have with these meaty mains. As we dined we kept telling each other just how good this fare was and we felt compelled to speak with Darren the chef before leaving in order to thank him personally. Seriously, we would say that Darren and the Vélo Wines team have achieved a dining experience only available at the very best restaurants. Well done Vélo!

“Tasty Lunch”

We stopped for a wine tasting, and decided on lunch as the restaurant looked inviting. Pizza was very good, light and crispy and of traditional style - flavoursome and not drowning in cheese/sauce. Lamb, mushroom and chorizo risotto was bliss - oozy and full of flavour with lots of mushroom and chorizo and a well seared piece of succulent lamb resting on the risotto. Pesto and parmesan on top added freshness and finished the dish. Service very friendly, efficient, professional excellent. The 'reserve' wines were preferable to our paatte and a good accompaniment to the meal. .

We've had a couple of lunches here - one really great and one ok. Food is nice but probably a little overpriced. Location is lovely though and staff friendly. Wines aren't exceptional but ok for a glass over lunch - no desire created to purchase from the cellar on leaving. That's subjective though, everyone's palate varies so try a tasting yourself.
