“Great place to explore the hills in Kintail”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a great place to spend a few days. The Inn is on the road to Skye and surrounded by hills, so has fantastic views. The rooms were really comfortable, clean and warm as was the main hotel areas. The food was great and the staff were friendly and helpful. Michael is a real asset to the hotel and was very attentive to what we needed, recommending whisky and encouraging guests to talk to each other. In all we had a great few days. You probably need to book in advance at weekends and in the summer as it's quite small and isolated.

Stayed for 2 nights recently as a wee late birthday treat to explore the South Glen Sheil Ridge.
On arrival the Inn was nice & warm & the room ready.
After getting settled into our large double room with a 4 poster bed we had a lovely meal in the bar.
I had the Venison Casserole & Angie had the Chilli Con Carne which was billed as mild but I found to my delight it had a good Chilli kick.
The Venison was well tender & went well with a couple of good local beers from Plockton.
Breakfast included Stornoway Black pudding which is always fab.
After 3 munro's ( mountains over 3,000 feet ) we were collected by the owner a few miles up the road in a nice Land Rover.
The hot bath in the room was well earned after over 5 hours climbing in sub zero temperatures with snow showers.
Another fab meal in the bar rounded off a perfect day.
The scallops with black pudding & chicken curry were faultless.
I don't know how anybody can complain about the food in the Cluanie Inn as it is some of the best bar food outside a resturant I have had in Scotland.
All in all a great stay in a great Inn.We even had red deer in the grounds at the back of the Inn. Mad Michael in the bar was another highlight, his patter is priceless.
My wife even bought me a nice targe for my birthday that was on sale in the bar.
I would highly reccomend this Inn to anybody that loves Scotland & good food.

Room Tip: Room 4 is a large double room with a large 4 poster bed looking south towards the south glen sheil r...

My wife and myself stopped here for lunch on the way to Skye from Drumnadrochit. Although the other reviewers are correct in that the reception area seems to have a funny smell, this is far from the case in the restaraunt/bar. The food we had was excellent, in my case the stornoway black pudding with haggis and a cream whiskey sauce for a starter and a chili con carne for a main. My wife had the Cluanie burger and we were both suitably impressed with the quality of the food and the cooking of it.

I've night-stopped here several times when motoring in the Highlands, most recently in early October, and the location is fantastic - you really are in the middle of nowhere, with awesome scenery all around and the main road metres from the front door..

Considering the isolated location, the rooms are very good - warm, clean and comfortable, with modern bathrooms and good views. The good heating point is important - I've stayed in highland hotels in autumn / winter where I just couldn't get the room to warm up. At the Cluanie Inn there are radiators with termostats in the bedroom and bathroom and they make the room toasty in no time (and can quickly be turned down, once you've warmed up).

Staff are friendly, and the restaurant / bar serves typical pub-type cuisine - steak, fish and chips etc. Food service is good, the meals tasted fresh and were enjoyed after a long day of driving.

The only real downside is the smell of dogs, particularly in the lobby area. The hotel owners have several dogs whcih all appear lovely, but the smell is a little too noticeable, as another reviewer mentioned. The bedrooms are fine, and smell perfectly fresh, but the hotel would do well to find a way around the doggie smells in public areas - without losing its very friendly and much-loved four legged friends, of course.

We spent 3 nights early Sept 12 at the Inn, with friends, and we all enjoyed our stay, good food, great choice of whiskey, and friendly staff. The en suite rooms, no 2 and 3 were comfortable and warm. We would definitely return. Fabulous base for walking the Glen Shiel ridge or any of the other walks in the area.

We stayed here en route to the Outer Hebrides. I chose it particularly as they were very dog friendly. Our room was clean and quiet despite the property being on a main road. Our supper was absolutely fine and we would definitely come here again when heading north.

I have twice had lunch now at Cluanie inn on my journey south from the Hebrides. This is very well appointed and decorated and the food was excellent especially the lamb tagine and venison casserole. One improvement could be a larger pot of tea to accompany the meal..the one supplied had only enough for a cup and a half. The setting is stunning and this would be a wonderful place for an extended stay. Will now be a regular visitor without question on my travels.
