There is quite a lot to do in this hotel when the weather is not very kind out there. The biggest minus that we noticed is that the food was good only for us parents the kids didn’t have a lot of choice and probably the chef doesn’t have kid’s because the food for children’s was always to spicy or too salty. Otherwise the hotel is really good located and there is a nice warm energy in it. There are just some small details that needs to be done.

In line with other reviews, the hotel is well situated for the slopes. Safe passage to cross the road to get to the ski lift near by. The hotel service is very good. They will organise passes for you so you just have to worry about equipment, which is available by the ski lifts.

The food (included in the price) has great variety (you have a buffet style layout plus each day there is a menu you can also pick from for evening meals). Kids choices are good too.

We have 3 kids and so the services / food / facilities for them is important to us. The first time we went (Feb 2009) we were impressed with all of these. Our youngest was then still 1 so we had to pay for a "babysitter" however the club was free for our other 2 kids (then 3 and 5).

The spa facilities are very nice (and free apart from other treatments). The only downside is that you're requested to go as nature intended - I know that can be an issue for some.

The pool area is nice and good to relax. There is a slide for kids (and big kids - me) that is good fun. This is next to the main pool and kiddy pool but behind a glass door / glass wall area which means all the noise of the fun in there is limited is volume for those relaxing by the big pool.

I was so impressed that I took my eldest son for a long weekend in March / April this year. The only downside at that time was that the slopes had less snow so the runs were limited compared to earlier in the season. Also, I'm am a beginner skiier as is my son, and I know others who are better skiiers would like more challenging runs or more variety after a week on the slopes.

I should also say that the ski schools were very good.

All in all, very nice, and recommended, especially to families.

We spent a week in Sillian at the Sporthotel last winter and the kids ( 8 and 4 ) can't wait to go back.

The staff is excellent, the General Manager everywhere at once, the food far better than most places I have ever stayed and the skiing great for someone who doesn't do double diamonds.

The lift is across the street via a safe tunnel, the slopes well maintained and never too crowded.

The hotel has a huge lobby lounge, great kids activiites, fantastic pools for adults and kids (the massage loungers in the swim out pool are a great place to watch the sun set over the Dolomites).

It takes a little driving to get there since there is no airport in the immediate vicinity, but that is well worth the effort.

One example - with no prompt, when we came down for dinner on my son's 4th b-day, there were balloons on his chair and a handmade crown with his name on it waiting for him.

Looking for someplace great to go with the kids - try Sillian and the Hochpustertal ski area.

On our recent trip to Italy we decided to take a road trip from the outskirts of Venice to the Dolomite Mountains. The drive was a challenge, extremely winding roads and hairpin turns but for anyone who loves to drive it was a fantastic experience. Unfortunately since it was November almost everything was closed, most of the resorts and small towns close up between the summer and winter ski seasons. It was starting to get dark and we were getting a little worried but about 40 minutes from the border of Italy we came upon the small town of Sillian Austria which was actually still open for business. The Sporthotel Sillian is a fabulous four-star hotel, and we received excellent value. For 235 Euro we received two huge rooms that could each sleep four people and both had balconies overlooking the mountains. This rate included a full buffet dinner and a breakfast, we had our own table set up with a children’s place setting and coloring for my son. And unlike the stays in other European hotels these rooms had proper sofa beds that were actually quiet comfortable. Extra touches like bathrobes (even a baby blue one for kids) slippers, and individual down comforters made the room very pleasant. They have a wonderful full service spa (we indulged ourselves with their aromatherapy massage) as well as a gorgeous indoor-outdoor pool and slide for the children. During peak season they even have a daycare open from 9 to 6 with nannies to watch the children while you enjoy an outdoor activity or the spa.

I am always on the lookout for great family locations that also have childcare, after this visit I did some additional research and apparently these types of hotels are very common in Austria, Switzerland and Germany, some of them provide up to 60 hours of childcare from age 2 up included in the price, many even have childcare for babies. If you search online for kinder hotels, it will allow you to search for these types of establishments.
