“St.Margaret Church in Medias , one jewel of Transilvania, Romania”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

Medias is located in the very heart of Transylvania, in the beautiful Tarnava Mare River Valley, its name has Roman origin, ‘per media’. it means ‘in middle of country’ .The old town
( first mention in 1267) had early fame for its wines, the region around named ‘Weinland’. The history of the town is seeing in varied architecture: Renaissance, Neo-Clasic, Baroque and Empire styles stay enclose the medieval building. Civita Mediensis, the medieval center of town has 17 towers and garrisons ranged along the 20-foot-high town wall. The Stone Workers Tower, was built in 1507 to serve as an entrance gate and the Forkesch Tower, a prisme-shaped building with a pyramid, now is a museum. The Evangelical Church, the barouqe Franciscan church, the Schuller House - in Renaissance style, are another attraction for tourists. The Evangelical Church, formaly a cathedral under the patronage of St.Margaret has a double-wall fortication and defensive towers, added in 1438, after the Turkish invsion.. In 1550, other 3 stories were added to the church tower, and next year in tower's corners were built turrets, as a token of the town's juridical right to carry out execution. A gracefull silhoute wich domines the view of town is Trumpeters Tower, considered as one of the first ten bent towers in the world. In this charming, unspoiled medieval town , tourists find warm, generous and welcoming people, and their cuisine and wines are exceptional. No mention that we can hear in pattering of wind, the sound of battle and siege , sometimes ! EvaChiser

History? Worth a visit and no crowds. Lots of good looking chicks.

“The church in a secret courtyard”
Reviewed June 9, 2012

Medias is a pleasant town to explore. We wandered the streets from a medieval tower to another.

St. Margaret is one of the most important Gothic buildings in Romania. It's in the town's center , a few streets away from the train station.

St Margaret is a fortified church but today is not surrounded by a wall but by buildings. It took us a long time to find the entrance passage. The buildings are still used today, one of them is a school. Unfortunately when we were there the church was closed so we could not admire it inside but is beautiful on the outside too and the courtyard is charming .
