“Lovely homely pub. ”
Reviewed November 28, 2013 via mobile

Had heard good things about The Plough from a friend who lives nearby. We weren't disappointed. Lovely friendly staff and delicious unpretentious food. Two if us had the lamb which was delicious. The Plough had a lovely cosy traditional feel to it. Will return.

Staff are great, except the boss who has an attitude. Watched him tell one couple to leave as he needed the table, and that "they should have been told" that there was a second sitting at 2. Seriously, if you don't know how to talk to people, don't run a pub. He took my payment which included a generous tip for his staff without eye contact or a thank you. Basic manners chap, get some.

I have visited this pub for drinks and lunch a lot over the past few years. It is situated in a perfect spot for hikers, cyclists and dog walkers alike and is also just as lovely if you do none of those things but simply turn up and enjoy the setting.

Unfortunately after our last visit I have to say that the owner/landlord really has become complacent.

The bar and restaurant area has been decorated to a really good standard and the food is generally of pretty good quality. I have always found the waitresses to be perfectly polite, as is the older lady who is sometimes seemingly left in charge but the 2 gentlemen who either own or run the place are surly and arrogant unless it seems you are a weekly returner.

The food is outrageously expensive for what you receive and the menu is set in a time warp. Yes a lot of the clientele probably do like that kind of thing, but unfortunately even the specials menu tends to sit on the safe side.

On some occasions it is pub grub at it's best but on some occasions it misses the mark and those in charge clearly don't rate the opinions and suggestions of their paying customers as I don't see many past responses, which I think always says a lot!

Come on time to accept that even a good ham, egg and chips is not worth £15.00, put a smile on your face for all your customers and think about revamping the menu just a little to make it worthy of continued repeat custom.

we had the misfortune of having Sunday lunch here recently.
I was with my family to celebrate a birthday after we ordered the food there was a very long wait for service and when it arrived several of our party had the stuffed pork.
the meal was terrible the plate consisted of a large portion of stuffing and fat with virtually no meat to be seen.
we spoke to the staff about this and they were less than helpful and really did not want to know.
however after some time they came back and told us that the pork was finished and that we could have the beef
they then proceeded to just bring that on a separate plate and when it arrived it was blood red and really totally not edible.
the management were arrogant and rude and could care less about their customers. They ruined what should have been a lovely day with family
if you want a good meal avoid the plough

Lovely location right on the Chiltern Way. so no need to drive to go for a walk.
Room simply furnished, warm, excellent shower, very friendly staff. Evening meal delicious and reasonably priced. Breakfast is served in the conservatory, simple but tasty usual cooked breakfast to order. Would recommend if you want a good weekend in the area.

Room Tip: We stay in room 4 which is over the front and above the smoking area. Might be a problem in the summ...

We have visited The Plough on four occasions over the last couple of months. Its location is well off the beaten path - so cannot rely on passing trade. Whether visiting midweek or at the weekend it is always busy and often difficult to reserve a table.
The staff are welcoming, attentive and courteous - nothing seems like too much trouble. The food is well presented, tasty and served promptly. All in all - a very enjoyable experience.

I booked a table for two at the Plough for Sunday lunch and had high hopes.

It's location is great, nestled in the foothills of the Chilterns it looks the type of place that you could easily spend £100 on Sunday lunch for 2 with three courses and bottle of wine, but no!
On arriving the car park was attended by a lonely looking man in a hi vis jacket directing cars into carefully marked 9ft spaces. There was a large sign showing how to park and how not to infringe on your neighbours space... Mmmm ok.

Inside there was a queue for the bar where you had to order drinks and food as there was no table service.

The menu screamed of an 80s menu that the owner refuses to change as I'm sure he'll say it's what he regulars like.
Prawn cocktail, pre-bought deep fried garlic mushrooms, soup of the day... All these dishes are what was so embarrassing about British food for so long and I'm so sad to see its still out there for visitors and tourists to see...

We ordered 2 lunches of roast pork and when they arrived it was clear as day that the potatoes were from the freezer and had been dropped into the fryer. No real taste.
The veg was bland, not seasoned and overcooked.
The meat was ok, but as we ate around 2.30pm I'm guessing it had been sitting about for a good few hours and as a result was very dry.

This place has so much potential, the location, the potential clientele (chilterns regulars and hikers) the beautiful building and garden, but it isn't living up to it, not even close.
This isn't the sort of place that will change as I think the owners/managers have fallen into a rut that they are comfortable laying in, but fingers crossed one day an aspirational young chef buys the place and transforms it, earns a star or 2 and it could become what it's crying out to be.
