Description: Bridging the gap between country inn & local restaurant The White Oak is an independent and contemporary 'Gastro Pub' where the kitchen & service sets out to please. A L Carte & Set menus also decent value (£15/19 for two/three courses at lunch and dinner). The traditional Roast is served on Sundays alongside the A La Carte. There's also plenty of good drinking on the Corney & Barrow wine list (look for Delamotte Grand Cru Champagne, Archaval-Ferrer Malbec, & 'Psi' Tempanillo from Michael Sisseck), Local Ales & Cocktails in the Bar. The relaxed dining room's thick beams, cream chandeliers and widely spaced, bare tables match the food's smart, unfussy tone, while warm, engaging staff and a compact, broadly priced wine list also fit the bill.

This food was honestly some of the best food I have ever tried! The service was great and everyone was very welcoming!

Attentive service, good quality mains and desserts, lovely atmosphere. We went for a Sunday roast and we had beef and duck as mains, followed by doughnuts as dessert. All was impeccable.

We have eaten here on a number of occasions and have always had good food and enjoyed the ambiance and friendly staff.

Last night was a great disappointment. Average food and poor service. We had a table booked inside and sat in the garden to have drinks. As it was such a warm evening, and it was very hot inside, we ate outside. The service was extremely slow, with no apology. The starters were good. Three of us ordered the special which was a prawn ragu. By the time the food came it was so dark we couldn’t see what we were eating and only offered one candle for a table of six. It was difficult to find the prawns which were under all the pasta. They were not prawns at all , but tiny shrimps. The potatoes that came with the other mains were cold and sent back. Most of the food was Luke warm. If they weren’t able to provide an outdoor service they should have said so, and also told us there was no outdoor lighting.

We came inside for desert and coffee. Waited for 20 mins to be served cold coffee and two ice creams that were too soft.

Overall, a poor experience. Not likely to be returning.

This place is pretty swish and in the swish village of cookam so if you like swish this is as swish as it gets. The staff are super friendly and swish, the food is gorgous and the wines selection is awsome! We stayed all day on a really hot day and never felt like we had to leave. Just so swish.

For mains I had the lamb and my partner had the stone bass. Both were absolutely delicious. 5 star rating. I kinda was left a bit sad that the portion wasn’t very big but in the long run I don’t really need to put on any weight so it was probably the right size in hindsight. We would have gladly had dessert but they were really slack on service and didn’t come to our table even though we had been given dessert menus we waited about 20-25 mins without anyone tending to us, even though it was quiet (Thursday night) and so we settled up, (I had been pondering over the cheese board) anyway, went to the local country store supermarket stocked up on £12 lovely selection of cheese which was a massive quantity and that served us well for two days back at home.
