“Brilliant food in a 'proper' pub!”
Reviewed September 23, 2011

I have visited The Crown several times for Sunday lunch and many more for a pint after work. I used to live locally. Since moving to London I have been unable to find a comparable roast dinner in any pub/gastro pub! and we are planning to travel the half hour train journey back to Otford this weekend to enjoy a roast!
This is a 'no frills' pub, the staff and landlord/landlady banter and chat informally with you, the customers are a real mix and the food is presented the way your mum might do it -certainly not a gastro pub, decent portions for a start! They have 3 sittings throughout the afternoon and it is necessary to book, it's very popular!
My only complaint about this pub is the large TV they put on a lot of the time with the volume up. I usually put the juke box on and ask them to turn the tv down if there isn't any sport on. The staff and owners are really friendly, down to earth people. I am really surprised by the previous review!

“Great value, Great food”
Reviewed September 1, 2011

We have been there several times and have found the food the best in Otford. The meat pies are as near as home made as you can find, my wife usually ops for the pan fried cod, long may it last, we highly recommend the Crown.

“Good lunch at the crown”
Reviewed July 19, 2011

Went to the crown for lunch today, good wholesome tasty pub food. The wife had pan fried cod with pesto, crushed potatoes and salad. I had a fiery lamb madras. Shared a massive crumble to finish, a pint and lime and soda all for 21 quid.
Can't argue at that for value.
Recommended.
Not sure what the other reviewer meant by lowbrow, perhaps he took a wrong turn and was looking for the library?

“Welcoming Pub, Good Cask Beer, Great Cider and resonable priced food.”
Reviewed June 9, 2011

We popped into this charming Tudor styled pub opposite the village pond in Otford, Kent, for a quick pint and snack and was greeted buy very attentive staff. The pub offered the usual array of keg lagers etc. but also had a pleasing array of Four cask ales, one which was brewed especially for the pub. Another welcoming find, was a locally produced cask cider "Magic Bus" a very quaffable but dangerously flavoursome little brew. A typical portly postcard styled landlord "Mark" introduced himself and recommended we view his recently refurbished garden. After his very enthusiastic Grand Tour and recommendation, we sat in the small cosy restaurant area for the special of the day. Shepherds pie with fresh veg, finished with homemade cake and custard. All in all what was going to be a quick visit to an interesting looking pub turned out to be a very pleasant afternoon.

“oppressively tatty & lowbrow”
Reviewed November 21, 2010

there are four pubs offering sunday roast in Otford. We opted for the one with the best online reviews. Arriving half hour early for a reservation we went straight to the bar. Nice log fire, but the tiny bar is taken over with a darts board and a large screen: showing darts. Tables for about 15 people in total.

We headed next door for lunch. The table was dirty and sticky, covered in stubborn remnants of beer mats. They offer 5 different meat roasts (beef, pork, lamb, beef, chicken), vegt and fish - every week. Each as small, medium or large. Too much choice means they don't concentrate on getting one roast perfect.

We had a turkey roast and beef roast. Both were very dry and we had to ask for lots of extra gravy. Not sure how the yorkshire puds were cooked - very odd. The side of veg to share could have been great if streamed, but alas, it was heated in the microwave.

The whole lunch was ruined by the cook (can't really call him a chef after that meal) loomed around both the bar and restaurant shouting at customers and staff - no he isn't the landlord (he was cawing behind the bar). I don't want the chef sitting next to me eating his packed sandwiches and a waiter on a laptop on his break.

The restaurant comes equipped with a looming ClearChannel plasma screening pumping out adverts all the time - if business is so poor you need to rely on the pittance from this for income - perhaps time for a change of direction?

Needless to say we didn't stay for desert.

If you don't like dogs don't go here. They are allowed in both the bar and restaurant, and they flood in.
