I've lived near Southampton for 13 years and this was my first visit to Netley Abbey. Wow! What a beautiful, peaceful place! In spite of the Abbey being converted into a mansion after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the building still has the atmosphere of a religious building, especially walking in the abbey church. There are information plaques round the place that describe the site and you can download an mp3 audiotour from the English Heritage website.

One thing that really surprised me is that the Abbey has free entry. I've been to similar attractions elsewhere and had to pay or use my EH membership card!

The attraction is well signposted on major routes and has a good size car park.

Very highly recommended if you need time to chill and perhaps enjoy a bit of history.

England has many fine old ruins of castles, keeps and abbeys but Netley Abbey would have to be up there amongst the best on offer.

Unfortunately we went in the middle of the week and it was closed so we had to go back on the weekend but it was well worth the trip. It is a fine example of ancient history and even though it is in ruins you could still feel the majesty of the place. If you stood in the centre of the Abbey and closed your eyes you could just imagine and hear the chant of the monks as they went about their daily rituals.

I am not sure if they would allow it but it would be a great place to get married at, especially in summer.
