We had Afternoon Tea yesterday, as a 90th Birthday Treat for my mother. I cannot fault anything apart from the room being rather chilly. We were greeted on arrival and our coats taken. I did ask if we would be warm enough and our hostess was not very definite in her response. We were shown to a small lounge, which had an unlit fireplace. I assume some heat came from a radiator on the far wall. The door was left wide open and cold air came in from the hall and with main door open all the time, any heat from radiator was lost.

Just not cosy enough for afternoon tea, as it would be part of the experience to have a real fire alight at this time of year so I can't give this review full marks.

This was a fairly last minute surprise birthday stay for my boyfriend. I struggled with dates and had to call and check a few things and then move dates but despite being a bit of a pain, the staff were excellent and so accommodating and helpful (before we'd even arrived). They sent me an email of the menu, booked the afternoon tea and gave me information on the local area.

It certainly ticked the 'excited' box as we drove in, and then as we walked through the stunning entrance, absorbing the view of the well maintained gardens and still in ore of the building, we entered the reception to be greeted pleasantly by staff who made us feel very welcome and honestly couldn't do enough for us.

The room (suite) worth every penny more! just entering gave us the 'wow' factor. It was a medieval environment but old, cosy and very romantic. like a little flat, the bedroom had a big four poster bed and bathroom a spacious bath with jacuzzi. Everything is kept fluid throughout with the dark wood and gold plated fixtures etc.

Fridge in the room is great for a bottle of champagne. Tea and coffee facilities and if you need anything else its right there as soon as you call what feels like your dedicated butler service.

Afternoon tea - really well presented and tasted delicious (we had one between the two of us).

There's no bar just a comfy lounge which i think was better but unusual. Again service was first class. The door is opened for you (as if you are a very special guest).

Breakfast - service, food and choice was exceptional.

We stayed one night but if we'd stayed for two it would have had to have had a spa for me (which is all it's missing).

The staff clearly value the customers. Staying somewhere like this is a one off for most i think, so its more of an experience that you never forget. I feel that the staff understand this and ensure that their guests enjoy every aspect of their experience, taking away a special memory.

Room Tip: worth going the extra for a suite

We have been to Amberley Castle a couple of times now and we have also been to Gidleigh Park which is part of the group, 3 times. The setting for Amberley is stunning and there is something quite magical about staying in a castle. The food was excellent and up to Michelin standard but unfortunately the dinner service wasn't as slick as it should have been and nowhere near as good as Gidleigh. The rooms have been modernised but we felt that they were still in keeping with the surroundings and certainly what you would expect of a 5* hotel. Overall the service was better than the last time we stayed but just missing that final touch.

Was forced to stay at Amberley when my business trip to Brighton coincided with large conference and therefore no hotels anywhere in the Brighton vicinity. What an amazing bit of fortune for me!

As an American, we are not accustomed to 900 year old castles, with working portcullis, in charming English villages that look exactly like they do in the movies. I freely admit I was tickled by the look of Amberley and its surroundings. The rooms were small but charming, the staff exceedingly friendly and accommodating of our late arrivals every day. The town pub was great for a pint and local flavor as you would expect.

The lagniappe was the daily commute from Amberley to Brighton through some beautiful countryside. Especially the return trip at dusk or in the dark driving much too fast but feeling every bit the secret agent fleeing Soviet henchmen. Yes, I was giddy zipping over the undulating road and blasting through the quaint villages along the way. So memorable.

NOTE: the trip was several years ago (before TripAdvisor) but wanted to spread the word about this fab experience

Going to keep it short and sweet. Wow. This place is flair! Want to impress your other half - take them to stay in a real castle, drive through a portcullis, eat next to a suit of armour, have afternoon tea next to a real fire, wander the castle grounds, stay in a castle style room. The food was terrific too, service great and plenty of things to do. The 18 hole putting course is fun. Definitely a place for a weekend treat.
