Good value for money hotel on Borobodur grounds. Opt for the Sunrise tour for an extra 15 US$, definitely worth it!

My sole reason for traveling to Java was to visit Borobudur ... I had seen a National Geograpic documentary years previously which had sparked my interest. I had tried once before but was put off by a rather unfriendly travel agents in Singapore. I should have tried harder.

Anyway on to the hotel. I made my own way to the hotel from Yogyakarta, on arrival the staff were typically Indonesian - very polite and courteous. It was fairly late when I arrived so the hotel was very quiet.

You are told about the dining room opening times etc. and given details as to what times you are allowed to visit the monument. The earliest time being 4.30am. As the hotel is in the monument grounds the price of entry is included within the hotel costs. This early entrance is also the earliest any visitor can get in - so you have the benefit of being first in, which avoids the hordes of tourists. And later on in the day, there are many tourists. This can be painful if you want that all important shot [without some random tourist].

The hotel rooms are clean and pleasant, my room had a comfortable bed and clean bathroom. The decor is average, but I don't find that important as I'm usually out and about anyway. I had a well stocked mini-bar, the prices were very good. The beds and towels were changed on a daily basis, which was good - I mention this as in some hotels in Asia they are changed every other day.

The dining room is of typical Indonesian design, open plan [apart from the pitched roof]. This is lovely, but expect an exoctic insect to do a fly-by every now and then. Various breakfasts are available; continental, English [well .... ish!!!] and Indonesian, from what I can remember. It is buffet style, so really you can take what you want within reason. You are given vouchers for the days of your stay. The quality isn't brilliant and a little tasteless.

Lunch and dinner foods were from a menu, which has a good mixture of European and Indonesian foods. The prices were average and the service was a little slow, but nothing to complain about. the cost was easily added to the room.

My biggest gripe was the severe lack of available excursions from the hotel ... there were none. Very disappointing. I went to find a tourist centre, which was a fair walk through the village only to discover it was closed. I did befriend a bike taxi dude, who was very helpful and was obviously willing to take me wherever I needed to go.

So to summarise, it is a great hotel to visit the Borobudur monument as you cant get closer, the rooms etc. are nice. The food is average and the excursions are non-existent.

Seeing Borobudur at sun-rise is a fantastic experience that you'll remember for the rest of your life. This is something that you have to keep in mind when booking the Manohara - you're not staying here for the hotel, you're staying here for the experience.

The hotel looks great from the outside, very pretty lobby area and great gardens. All the rooms have seprate entry - like in a motel. The rooms are on the small side, and the furniture is old and worn. But you'll most probably be staying here for just one night, and there's everything you need for that. There's also a small outside seating area with chairs and a table.

The only place to eat around Borobudur is the hotel's restaurant. It's very fairly priced - considering that they could have set much higher pricae which you'd end up paying anyway, as there's no alternative. The food is nothing special, but nothing to complain about either. Breakfast is pretty much what you'd get in most budget and mid-range hotels in Indonesia.

The hotel offers pick-up service from Yogyakarta for about 25 dollars. A car back to Yogya costs the same, and while it may be a bit overpriced by local standards, it's worth it for the convinience.

This is a place where you should only stay for 1 night and nothing more! It's about an hour away from the airport and the hotel's taxi service was way more expensive than the regular taxi cars. On first arrival, the lush gardens and glimpse of Borobudur made the place absolutely enchanting. The restaurant is beautiful, but the food is average. Our standard room was absolutely tiny for its price and although it was clean, the TV didn't work at first and the bedsheets were stained. The best and only worthy experience at this place was the chance to visit Borobudor before sunrise and the oncoming crowd.

We arrived very late after dinner at about 8pm (apparently it's pitch black by 6pm). The signboard regally proclaims "Welcome to the Princess Manohara Resort Hotel".

At check-in, they gave us complimentary tea and a traditional biscuit. Then they brought us to our rooms (we had booked 5 for our group of 9) - all rooms look out towards gardens, which we didn't realize until the next morning.

The room is rather basic, with 2 single beds, a rather old TV, old desk, and a rather antique bathroom. The air-cond didn't work very well in my room, occasionally spouting warm air - but my friend's room's aircond worked perfectly fine. The bathroom is nothing fantastic, and the shower head is laughable, but it provides hot and cold water, so no complains. I was only there for the sunrise tour!

We got up at 4am (thank goodness for the hotel's wake-up call) and arrived at the lobby by 4.30am to pay 150,000 rupiah per person for the sunrise tour ticket and a flashlight. A hotel staff walked us to the entrance gate of Borobudur, and we followed a group up to wait for the elusive sunrise that we never got to see due to cloudiness. But the view was great - I loved the mist, and the forests, that all looked like watercolour paintings from up there. Yes, this is the only reason why you'd stay here in Manohara hotel - because it gives you access to Borobudur before the crowds of schoolkids enter, and the price doesn't burst your budget.

Breakfast was mediocre - very salty fried rice, sausages, scrambled eggs, butter and toast, fruits, too sweet cordial juice, coffee and tea. And a freshly-cooked banana fritter with cheese gratings - which seems to be a special food in this part of Indonesia (because I saw this in Ibis Semarang's room service menu too). Well, we weren't here for the breakfast, we were here for the view - which was amazing. At night, when it's lit up, Borobudur looks magical. In the day, shrouded in haze, it's still mystical. We spent a couple of hours seated in the coffee house just reading and surfing internet (they have free wireless in the lobby) and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of the gardens.

I love this hotel!

Very nice place to stay in the countryside. You have only a short walk to the temple. Room was very nice and had bright lights. The restaurant was quite good. We loved to stay there.

The hotel is located within the park that houses the Borobudur Temple and it is really worthwhile to stay here if you intend to watch sunrise at Borobudur Temple. The sunrise package starts at 4.30am from the hotel lobby, you get to thetop of the temple before 5am and by about 5.45am, the sun starts to rise behind Mount Merapi. After sunrise, you walk back to the hotel where breakfast is served at 6.30am. For the sunrise package, breakfast is banana fritters topped with shredded cheese and coffee/tea (see picture). The hotel rooms are basic but they are clean and comfortable, with air con. Free wifi available at hotel lobby.
