this is our second aman group stay and its one of the finest experiences we had .
situated within gazing distance at the amazing borubudur temple it calms you from the moment you enter the hotel after which Mark and the team at amanjiwo step it up a notch with their welcome drink of ginger beer
all the activities which they included in our stay were super special mention to having soursop martinis in the rice fields served with delicious snacks
the private dining that they set up in the rice field -javanese food -absolutely delicious
the dinner at pak bilal house rustic and romantic
breakfast pancakes -and kopi lewak-- thanks once again --out of this world
tours of borubudur and prambanam temples -outstanding
the swimming pool is fantastic and clean
pijak massage lady -super strong and fantastic
one of our best stays in aman
looking forward to return one day

We booked to stay at Amanjiwo as part of the Bali & Beyond package that Aman offers and we were very pleased that we did. The 3 places we stayed, including Amandari in Ubud Bali and Amankila in Manggis Bali were all so different iit made it more exciting .
Mark & his team do an excellent job, in a very laid back friendly and helpful way. I find this with all the Aman hotels, fantastic service without the starchiness of a 5 star resort!!
The villas are amazing, we had a pool villa facing Borobodur, and although ithis is quite far away, on a clear day you can see it, although it is small !
The pool area was lovely and quiet, fantastic after a morning of being out and about!
All The food was lovely, and we especially loved the evening bbq by the pool and also Pak Bilals house. This is a dining experience in a traditional Javanese local house. The food is supplied by the hotel along with a waiter, but the local man cooks the menu you have personally selected. It was very romantic and a fantastic evening. Definately one to book. We also did the Borobodur sunrise trip which although is an early start (4.15am wake up call) its well worth it. After that trip we went on the elephants up to Dagi Hill for a little ride about, and wished we had booked the picnic breakfast to have up there, laid on by hotel, as it looked fabulous!!
Another day we took the Andong (horse & cart) through the local villages and rice fields which was very interesting and saw pottery being made, tapioca etc etc.
If you wish to see Pramabaran temple whilst staying at the hotel, it makes sense to do it on the way back to the airport as its about 1.5 hrs away, but 10 mins from yogyacarta airport. Just leave a couple of hours earlier , and meet the guide there, and then off to the airport.
All in all we had a very interesting , but relaxing stay at a beautiful hotel.

Room Tip: Borobodur pool villa very nice.

We stayed here on honeymoon. We loved it, in particular we loved:

- the staff, who were very friendly and spoke great english
- the food was good. We especially liked one of the optional extras which was an evening by the pool where they set out some market stalls with various types of food to try and then entertained us with some high quality traditional dancing
- the activities in the package we paid for were cool, in particular we did a nice cycle trip around some rice paddies with a guide that spoke excellent english
- there are some free activities you can go to like meditation and yoga which were in a lovely setting... on the edge of rice paddies at dusk as the mosques are calling to prayer it really felt magical
- when we were leaving my wife became ill which is never nice when on holiday/away from home. The staff at Amanjiwo were fantastic, the onsite nurse was very professional and we really felt looked after in that respect.
- We went to a lecture in the hotel about Borobudur the night before we went to visit it which really helped get a sense of what we were seeing. The lecture was given by a very well informed speaker.
- They gave us a free massage as we were on honeymoon which was great

Our reservations were:

- The rooms could do with a little bit of renovation I think, some of the fixtures felt a touch old for the price of the hotel...
- it's pretty expensive such that you really feel like anything that's not the best has a risk of being a disappointment. I partly felt like that with the food just because other places we stayed possibly had more variety.

All you would expect from an Aman property.First class discreet service, great location only minutes away from the Borobadur temple complex, but a quiet and peaceful situation in the Menorah hills. The suites are really lovely, a few signs of age, yes, but nothing to worry about. The suites are serviced twice a day to a very high standard, and always while you are out or having a meal. We spent a lot of time in our generous courtyard bale which was very comfortable and caught the breezes, as well as having views of the distant temple.Breakfast was good with lots of choices, and dinner was very good, if not amazing. the daily afternoon tea of freshly prepared lemongrass, ginger and lime tea was the best I have ever had.The pool is an impressive 40m, quite long enough for some serious swimming, and the service at the pool is excellent too.We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, with all the special Aman touches from a very welcome and civilised small table set with a light breakfast at 4.30 am before visiting Borobadur, to the little present awaiting on the bed each night.
Only a couple of negatives,we would really have liked a kettle and tea tray, the only place in Indonesia where we did not have one.And the hotels mark up on the already expensive wine is 2 or even 3 times that of other hotels we stayed in,by far the most expensive place we stayed in Indonesia to have a glass of wine! Hard to justify when other hotels manage to offer the same wines for a lot less. But a thoroughly enjoyable stay with everything taken care of by the excellent staff, and a very convenient location for visiting Borobadur, Yogya and Prambanan

Room Tip: Lovely to have a Borobudur view, but didnt regret not having a pool suite, as the hotel pool is so...

Definitely a special occasion place, it's expensive but if it's within your budget then try to spend at least one or two nights there when you visit Borobodur. Service is exceptional and nothing is too much trouble. While we were there the hotel appeared about one third full so it was a very relaxing ambience. We did a couple of trips with a guide - the sunrise at Borobodur followed by a picnic breakfast and a morning trip to the local market. Both were really excellent. While you are at the hotel there really aren't many dining options other than to eat in the hotel restaurant. Food was excellent - and pricey - so close your eyes as you sign the bill on check-out and don't even think about converting the prices from rupiah back to your own currency. That's what your credit card company is for!

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in late April during a two week tour of central Java and Bali. This place does live up to it's billing for comfort, splendor, and architectural brilliance. It also makes possible almost unrivaled access to the Borobudur archeological site given the scarcity of competing hotels in the vicinity. We very much enjoyed everything about our stay, but I will single out just a couple of items rather then repeating what has been well described by others. The design of the hotel and grounds was indeed stunning, but as lap swimmers, we were particularly enthralled by the pool. The design of this area, mirroring the temple motif, was really spectacular. And since it was 40 meters long we were in swimmers nirvana. We also really enjoyed the gift shop where we purchased a number of items, ranging from clothing, to some beautiful jewelry, and a vintage Javanese travel poster. All of these things were fairly priced, I thought, given the setting in this luxury hotel. This was all fairly straightforward, with one interesting and noteworthy exception. We were also interested in a pair of 19th century silver Sumatran bracelets which were mounted for display, but we couldn't make up our minds and left without making the purchase. After arriving at our next stop in Bali we decided that we might have made a mistake and decided to contact Suzi, our salesperson in the Amanjiwo gift shop. She really went well beyond the call of duty by arranging to have the bracelets hand carried by a staff person at the hotel, who was flying to Bali the next day to visit one of their sister properties. After arriving she had the items driven to our hotel by their driver. I really doubt that most places would go this far out of the way to make a sale on an item that was there on consignment, or to provide this level of customer service. We were impressed by this, as well as grateful, to Suzi and the rest of the staff at Amanjiwo for the quality of service, and for the genuine warmth with which it was offered. If you can afford to stay here, you shouldn't hesitate to do so.

Room Tip: "if you can afford it, book a room with a view of the temple."

It's curious to me to reading some of the negative reviews on here about Amanjiwo. Some may be unfamiliar with the Aman concept (very few would expect to immerse themselves in a culture by watching television in their rooms). Some maybe just a bit spoiled and over-demanding, by the sound of it. But, suffice it to say that the positive reviews overshadow the negative views by a significant margin, so it is in the spirit of that, that I give a hearty thumbs up to Amanjiwo.

We were met at the airport by Amanjiwo representatives, who took us to an executive lounge holding area while they retrieved our luggage. Cool towels, and fresh libations were offered prior to a significant drive to the facility. Upon checkin, one could immediately note the fantastic architecture. Set high on the Menoreh Hills, the first views are breathless and lead your line of vision directly to Borobudur, one of the world's largest sanctuary. One feels like one of the Buddhist statues must inside of the stupa looking through the walls of Amanjiwo. Many of the architectural elements and lines of Borobudur have been incorporated to this facility. The volcanic ash roof is unassuming and allows it to be tucked away neatly into the hillside while minimizing its imprint.

Aside from being structurally appealing, I found the manager, Mark, to be quite nice and affable. He was very pleasant and talked to us about the history of the facility, suggested a nice walking trek for us, and where we might take some great photos.

I found the breakfasts and dinners to be on par with the other Aman facilities in Indonesia. In fact, the chicken curry soup was outstanding...I couldn't get enough of it. I also liked their ginger beer welcome drink quite a bit and ordered it several times when at the pool or at dinner. The morning buffet offered excellent pastries and plates of neatly cut fresh, native fruits, and the morning menu offered selections of Western and Eastern cuisine.

The rooms were very large. We had an infinity pool suite that was delightful, although, not completely private, as one could walk through the front entry way without passing through the suite to access the pool area. The vistas from the pool area and the room were very nice. At night, the pool created an amazing tapestry for the fresh bouquet of orange flowers that sat on one of the sitting area tables. There was a Bose sound system playing local music upon arrival and incense was burning. There was ample place for hanging clothes and luggage storage, double vanities, and large shower and tub. Although unused, our tub appeared clean and in good order.

The main pool was long, narrow and dramatic. The colonnade and adjacent poolside restaurant offered an interesting architectural reminder of the main building where reception is located. There are lots of stairs throughout the property, and I never felt as though there were "lots of people" around, despite the fact that the facility was near capacity.

I had a very positive experience here. Although here for only a short time, I found service, and room quality to be on par with other Aman facilities. In addition, there is a gym facility on the property, despite assertions in other comments that there is not.

Room Tip: The pool suite is very nice and offers great views of the rest of the property, Borobudur, and valle...
