“THE Nirvana...”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

In our human life, we always think about how to access to the Nirvana on Earth? This is a very hard way to find it actually but after 4 visits at Amanjiwo, i can confirm this is when staying in this superb resort you'll find the response. We found it a week ago when we stayed at Amanjiwo...
This Aman is immaculate, incredibly elegant and mystical. Architecturally this is undoubtedly the most extraordinary hotel of the world with divine perspectives on the amazing temple of Borobudur you'll discover like a jewel across a not less amazing nature. You'll be undoubtedly under the charms of the local life around and don't hesitate to go and explore the villages around Jiwo to meet the javanese and their way of living so authentic.
But let's talk about what Amanjiwo provides... Simply the most incredible and excellent experience you can expect. It's even hard to expect what the Jiwo family will do to make of your stay something totally unforgettable. The staff is perfectly trained to offer to the lucky guests the highest level of service and they all work with heart. The anticipation is just impressive and the sense of detail is just perfect. During our stay i've had a sunburn and our private butler provides me fresh aloe vera without me to request for anything. An other day, he escorted us to a walk in the countryside and since it was too hot, he called a driver who immediately tailored a car tour to show us some marvelous unexplored places. We enjoyed as well a very special dinner in a local house, everything arranged by Amanjiwo. This is actually the house of Pak Bilal, a villager who rent a part of his authentic house to Aman to turn it into something just fabulous. Our butler arranged everything so wonderfully we'll never forget this moment. The pathway going to the kitchen was full of candles and the decoration of the kitchen where we had an excellent dinner cooked on charcoal was simply unique. We were totally out of this world like in a dream. Don't miss this very unique Aman experience to find the way to the Nirvana.
We have been absolutely impressed not to find any mistake at Amanjiwo but absolutely no one. Everything is more than PERFECT and the new GM, Mark, is just one of the nicest guy we have been lucky to meet. He has such a great sense of excellence and he's so kind, always ready to do something to turn your experience into something magical.
I could talk longer about Amanjiwo which is, I really think, the most exceptional hotel of the world. I could talk about the yummy food; the fantastic maintenance or the atmosphere just unique but I prefer just to say GO and experience the only place in the world which will drive you to THE Nirvana.

We stayed at Amanjiwo for three nights on our honeymoon (also stayed at Amandari and Amankila) and thought it was amazing. Amanjiwo has an absolutely stunning location and architecture that picks up on the themes of Borobudur, the Buddhist temple nearby. We went to Amanjiwo entirely to see Borobodur and had very few expectations outside of that, but we were so pleasantly surprised.

Like all of the Amans we stayed at, an expediter picked us up from the airport and whisked us away while he handled everything and found our luggage. Once in the air conditioned car, we had water, snacks, and a list of excursions to consider once at the resort. Our driver was so friendly and knowledgeable; in fact, he ended up being our tour guide for Borobudur as well. Once at the resort, little girls threw flower petals as a welcome and we had some welcome ginger soda, which was tasty. The guest assistant walked us through every aspect of our suite, which had been upgraded to a private pool suite, much to our surprise and delight.

The rooms themselves are modern and full of nice touches, like the sunscreen, toiletries, beach bag and hat (yours to keep), and water colors (which we didn't use, but it was a unique addition). Our room had jasmine and orchid plants, plus the ubiquitous (and lovely!) local tropical fruit display for your snacking pleasure. The private pool was small, just the right size, and there was a cabana at the end.

Of the three Amans we visited, all had amazing housekeeping staff, but at Amanjiwo they were one step beyond. They were like ninjas who descended on our room whenever we left, whether for a five minute walk or a 2 hour dinner. They fluffed and tidied and replaced even the smallest of details with each visit. Truly impressive.

You can expect top notch service and hospitality at an Aman resort, and Amanjiwo was no different. The GM introduced himself personally and made recommendations not only for our stay in Java, but also for our next stop at Amankila. Every staff member seems to know your name, whether or not they have ever set eyes on you before, and everyone we met was extremely friendly and kind.

Amanjiwo offers numerous activities and excursions; since we wanted relaxation and culture, we selected the tour of Borobudur, martinis at sunset in the tobacco fields, and lunch in their bale overlooking the resort. As honeymooners, they also provided a complementary massage. Everything was great, most notably our sunset tour of Borobudur. Most of the guidebooks tell you to visit at sunrise, but our driver (and later, guide) recommended the sunset tour because after the sun sets, only those who have paid extra for the sunset part of the tour get to stay. The temple was packed with people until the sun set, and then we were one of maybe two couples on top of Borobudur. Having Borobudur all to ourselves was amazing and totally worth the extra price.

Amanjiwo is pricey and may seem remote, but the resort, the grounds, the staff, Borobudur, all of it makes Amanjiwo worth the visit and the price. It's truly spectacular.

Deplaning, we were met on the tarmac by an Amanjiwo representative & wisked away in a private van to the executive club...Wow...did I feel special. We were starving so we voraciously stuffed ourselves with Indonesian delights. The attendants retrieved our bags & patiently waited for us to finish. We had had a horacious night before with a canceled flight. We were exhausted. The Amanjiwo greeted & treated us like kings. They upgraded us to a pool viila. And I am not sure why I didn't request one in the first place. its the only way to go.
Service is outstanding. You never know when they tidy the room. it is always when you are not present. Food abounds. In the room there is a fruit basket, cookies, chips, and then the meals are plentiful...forget about your diet. The room is awesome. A large cushioned sitting platform to sit in the backyard overlooking the tobacco fields & the pool of course.
The music sound system is one of the best. The ipod is loaded with a variety of music.
There is an outside bathtub which I enjoyed daily.
We mainly surfed the internet & read, but there are many activities. we did take a horse buggy ride through the village, I highly recommend, & we took a short hike. Most of all we enjoyed ourselves. The massage was divine.
This is a Muslim country so don't be surprised by the lack of Etoh in the frig but B Y O B.
All in all wonderful stay. You are fortunate if you can experience this.

The dream begins at jogyakarta airport, when you are picked up by a wonderful 4wd plenty of amenities, and leave the traffic jam towards the hills. Then you arrive in this special part of paradise and discover your Borobodur suite, you start to undestand that THIS is really a temple itself. You have " private " view of Borobodur all day long.
Brunch at swimming pool and dinner in the main restaurant are memorable.
But, the most impressive thing is the service, and how the property is run: unbelievable, considering the surroundings
My personal advice is to ask for a Borobodur suite, at all.

If you come from the solo airport it will take you about 1:20 min drive... but when you arrive...WOW!
You feel like you're Indiana Jones!
We went there for the Borobudur temple and we were not dissapointed! The temple is Amazing, and our guide was very interresting, and told our 2 little girls plenty of nice stories about the temple to fascinate them. His nam was "Buddi" I think. He just had the capacity of making it interresting to children aged 7 & 9, made us practice som Thai chi, and showed us the best Photo spots!

The hotel is great, serene, huge, but with a very limited number of rooms (all bungallows- like always in an Aman). We took a pool suite, and like in all Amans, the pool was large enough (a bit chilly though) but unfortunately we were on a second row. Try to ask for a first row bedroom, to enjoy a better uninterrupted view of Borobudur.

The borobudur market was a great experience with a lovely guide as well. We purchased a couple of birds, and let our girls release them later... it was lovely...

The Prambana temple is not as impressive, but woth the trip...

Also note that we took the Sunrise Breakfast after the borobudur visit (starts at 5 AM), and this was the most beautiful breakfast ever! On a small hill, by the temple, with a fantastic view on Borobudur... we felt alone in the world... simply don't miss out that one!

Room Tip: 1st row bedrdoorms with a pool of course!

The hotel is really beautiful. But we got the feeling that the management rely on this fact and do not care about the service. Which is very disappointing for an Aman-Resort.

We stayed 6 days at a Borobodur Pool-Suite and our travel agency had pre-booked two temple-tours and handed us a list with activities; three of them should be free.
In our room we found a similar list that said that the room rate includes three excursions or other activities. We were not sure if the two pre-booked tours would be part of the three free ones or not so we went to the customer service. The responsible person was as confused as we were. He checked both lists again but didn’t ask the management or had a look at our travel documents. Instead he came up with the following solution: I think the two tours are already part of the package so you can choose only one more. But you can book as many tours as you like and we will charge you.
I would say that “In case of doubt let the guest pay” is not really customer oriented. And then he even forget to book the tour that we chose. And the additional bottled water that we had asked for never arrived.

One of our free tours was to Borobudur. When we decided to go in the afternoon they convinced us to go in time to see the beautiful sunset. Later we found ourselves charged with the fee for an additional sunset ticket. It is just rude and impolite to add things to the bill without further notice.

Two days before departure we went to the service desk to arrange our transfer to the airport. We thought that our flight was at 11am from Solo to Singapore and the guy booked a pick up at 6.30am and a wake-up call at 5.00am. Back in our room we had another look at our tickets and saw that the flight was already at 10am.
The day we arrived they even copied our tickets and emphasized that they want to make sure that everything will go smoothly. There is only one flight to Singapore. How can it be that the customer service does not bother to check the correct flight time?
We went back to the service desk and arranged an earlier transfer and wake-up call.
Luckily we had our own alarm clock because the wake-up call came an hour too late. Actually it came right after we called the bellboy to pick up our luggage.

All of these was the failure of the service desk. I am still a bit angry about myself because we were too polite to say that the big tip that we left should just go to housekeeping and service at the pool which were both perfect.

You probably don't need to read many reviews to realise this is something truly special, even among the Aman resorts. When the people at Amansara tell you to go there and get a whistful look in their eyes, you know you should.

Situated a couple of miles from Borobudur, halfway up a hill, this modern building's architecture mirrors the temple and is built so all the views point to and frame the temple - as you drive in down the ramp, you see in a dead straight line ahead of you Amanjiwo and Borobudur. The rotunda of the main building is a wide airy entrance hall and restaurant area surrounded by a terrace.

It's one of those classic asian experiences to eat here and watch the temple as it gets dark, all the while being distracted by the bats flying around up by the ceiling and sharing their catch of flies with the geckos. Fortunately the human food is better than what the bats get: personally I'm not as big a fan of Indonesian as I am of Japanese, Indochinese or Thai food (it's a bit heavy and if you're going to go for that, you might as well go the whole hog and eat North Indian which has bigger flavours), but the kids managed 3 Nasi Goreng per day and were in absolute heaven. Do try the black rice porridge though, if you want something local but a bit different.

The villas are good for a couple (get one with a pool) but a little on the small side for our family of four: they're all more or less the same size which is a pity, because a few 2-bed units wouldn't go amiss. Nor would a proper gym: they've converted one viewless unit at the side for gym use, but this seems to have been an afterthought.

No doubt this is the best accomodation near Borobudur, but it does come at a price. My wife also recently stayed at the Plataran Borobudur, which whilst not quite up to the same standard, does have a wider choice of unit sizes for families and is less than half as much money: only do Amanjiwo if you really want the best and money is no object.

Apart from the obvious dawn viewing and climbing of Borobodur, we did the guided hill climb and visited Prambanan: both worthwhile. The pony cart ride round the village less so, the fly-ridden local market awful and a major health hazard to all bar the hardiest locals.

One funny moment was my son's ears being covered by the guide as he explained the Karma Sutra carvings on one of the many, many Prambanan temples. However, both children enjoyed the tale of the prince challenged to build 1000 temples in a night in order to win the hand of a prince, who, thwarted by his bride to be starting to destroy them after he had built 999, in his anger turned her to stone.

Yogyakarta too is worth a look, but some distance from Amanjiwo so I would recommend you spend a night there on the way in or out, don't do it as a day ride from Amanjiwo.
