We spent three wonderful nights and can't wait to return. The accomodations and staff are truly exceptional. All rooms are the same
layout except for the view, our room had a view of Borobudor in the distance. It was hard to decide whether to sit inside or out on the lovely terrace. The food was fantastic and we ate in the hotel dining
room every night. The staff arranged all excursions for us and the guides were excellent. We've never seen a more fabulous pool, great to relax after lots of sightseeing.

We stayed at Amanjiwo for 6 days in September. On average we stayed longer than most guests but there is certainly enough on offer to do here to fill everyday...although as the staff will tell you, doing nothing at Amanjiwo is an activity all on its own and widely encouraged!

From the minute we were met at the airport, to the second we arrived back there, we could not fault the amazing service. Everyone was welcoming, friendly, approachable; nothing was too much trouble. On arrival you will receive a list of activities to choose from and can do as little or many as you wish - no pressure. We visited the local villages, made pottery, visited tobacco plantations, saw glass noodle making, went to the main markets, had a wonderful picnic above the colliding rivers. You can go hiking in the hills behind the resort (if you're not as pregnant as one of us was!) or take out the mountain bikes and just explore - the villagers are extremely friendly, especially the children.

The one thing we would recommend above all others is the elephant trekking. Usually this is tied in with getting up at 4.15 am to take in Borobudur at sunrise, then riding back to the resort by elephant. When we were there only two elephants were working and this option was all booked up. Instead, we met the elephants at reception (really!) at 9.30am and rode them through villages, paddy fields and rivers for an hour and 45 minutes to Borobudur. It was an absolutely amazing experience and in our opinion the very best way to arrive at the Temple. We did the cultural tour after that (very worth while) and could have stayed and had a picnic lunch had we chosen to. We can't recommend this experience highly enough, so if you want to do it ask Amanjiwo to book it for you before you arrive to make sure.

Other things worth a mention...
- we stayed in a garden villa which had a big terrace and bale with a view across the countryside to Amanjiwo (no.5) - great in the morning for breakfast. It also has an outside bath. Bliss. The pool villas have the same space, but the main pool is huge and gorgeous so why have your own!?
- surprises! every evening we would return to find some kind of surprise; roses and petals in the bath, or around the bed; jasmine hung from the doorways; champagne; shadow puppets; always a couple of Indonesian sweet delicacies for supper! Great touch.
- The food was magnificent and the Head chef, Linda, was a delight.
- Amanjiwo is a tourist attraction in itself - beautiful - and at lunchtime the rotunda is full of people just coming to see the hotel.
- There is free ginger tea and indonesian sweets on the terrace in late afternoon - go and try it.
- Amanjiwo ginger beer is the best in the world. Get the recipe!

It's a minor gripe and nothing to do with Amanjiwo at all, but we were there during Ramadan which meant calls to pray in the early hours of the morning and then around sunrise. Not conducive to sleeping! However, sitting in the evening and staring out into the darkness when all you can hear is the insects, the birds, the animals and a thousand voices all singing the Koran is just extraordinary and we wouldn't have missed it for the world.

From time to time in your life, you have time in a hotel or resort where everything just happens effortlessly. Perfect weather, memorable food, and staff that seem to read your mind and get everything right. Amanjiwo is the real article. No doubt one of the most interesting and thoughtful places I have ever been managed by a guy who seems to breed exceptional desires for customer care into his staff.
Amanjiwo is a beaurtiful resort with beautiful facilities. The rooms are not rooms; they are sleeping temples. The common areas were built with design and material features that will remain for hundreds of years. I am not exaggerating. The food is prepared with the freshest ingredients and presented/served with a wait staff unique to Asia (in that they understand the food and great service when supporting the order).
Amanjiwo is not exceptional because of its impressive facilites. It is the staff- the software- that is exceptional. My wife and I will never forget our time there.

Finally managed to return to Jiwo for a 4 night stay over Xmas and whilst I was apprehensive to see if the previous magical experience would be repeated, I needn't worry.

This is still for me, by a long way, the best hotel I stayed anywhere in the world. I don't want to repeat myself with a description of the hotel (see my previous review) but even though Jiwo does not have the best facilities (no spa to speak off, no gym etc.) it is managed in a such a superlative way that you will not miss anything.

The service is still outstanding and their ability to anticipate your needs is even getting better. I was in touch with the Manger prior to my arrival, wanting to ensure a memorable trip for my fiancee and he certainly achieved it... It started by being picked up by the same driver/guide I had the last time who genuinly seemed over the moon to see me again. Then we had some special walks in the mountains organised for us which we'll remember forever and to top it all up, Sean the manger arranged for us to witness a 'trance dance' in the local village - a rare privilege to experience a local tradition in all its intensity (the dancers can dance for several hours whilst overtaken by evil spirits and during the trance they end up eating anything from broken glass to hot ash without feeling any pain!).

But if you are feeling lazy, sit on your bale (day bed) with a drink and watch the low clouds, misticly passing through the hills behind you - you won't want to move for hours...

Another exceptional visit to Jiwo and looking forward to the next one - if you are anywhere near in the region, you would be foolish to mis an oppportunity to get the 'Jiwo experience'.

My family spent 3 days at Amanjiwo and I have to admit that we were all a little dubious of what our time there would hold, having spent a few days previously at Amanusa in Bali enjoying the beach and golf. In short, after the initial Bali indulgence the idea of a more cultural experience was not high on our agenda.

How wrong we were! This trip was made truely magical by the dream like setting and the effervecently happy staff who made this holiday one of the greatest of many trips aborad out family has ever had. We could not recommend Amanjiwo enough.

The Amanjiwo should be a leading candidate as the "World's Best Resort Hotel." The hotel specializes in luxury accommodation for visits to the cultural sites around Yogyakarta, Indonesia, including the spiritual and fascinating Borobudur and the many other ancient temples located in central Java. From the moment we arrived at the local airport to the moment we departed the hotel staff took a personal interest in our itinerary and suggested many activities that added experiences we will never forget. The hotel's sunrise excursion to Borodudur followed by a return to the hotel through villages and across rivers by elephant was unforgettable. Each of the hotel staff were very well trained and went beyond our expectations in providing personal service. For example, the hotel staff escorted us to a local village "trance dance" festival that was unscripted and certainly not a tourist event. The hotel staff also recommended cultural activities that were unexpected surprises - like dinner at a local "warung" where we were able to meet and chat with many common local people and appreciate the local culture more than any tour. Food and service unsurpassed - unforgettable five star experience.

My husband and I went there during Xmas 2005 with another couple and their newborn. Very very impressed with their service, inclusive al-la carte breakfast with marvelous Javanese coffee. The absolute best resort breakfast , surpassed Banyan Tree and most others we had been stayed at by miles.

We got to feed the elephants, attended a class that discussed a "class" that talked about the Boroburdur. The only complaint was the rainy weather during our stay in December, had a pool villa but rarely used it cos of the nonstop rain, had only a day of sunshine out of the four. The only perfect day to visit the magnificient monument. Service could not be better and unique hotel building. Villa overlooking the rice fields and the religious chants were soothing. Would love to go back there again during good weather. Spa was good but not the best that we've been to.
