This was a highlight of Java! Wonderful accommodation, food to make you drool in delight, romantic, beautiful setting, the most gracious and helpful host and the superb experience of sunrise at Borobudur temple as well as a tour of The Hidden Temple organised for us by our host and facilitated by an exemplary guide full of knowledge, humour and patience! It all just makes me me smile!!

We spent a month traveling throughout Southeast Asia and Rumah Dharma was absolutely the highlight.

The property consists of 4 separate bungalows with decent bathrooms and ac. Each has its own little front porch which is a great area to read or just relax and enjoy the beauty of the scenery. The dinners are good with a great selection of local dishes but the highlight is breakfast, hands down the best omelette and scrambled eggs we have ever had served with plenty of delicious fruit. We don't drink coffee but I was told it was exceptional as well.

Rumah Dharma is surrounded by deep green rice paddies with a distant misty view on the surrounding mountains. The villagers are some of the happiest people we have ever met, no matter what they are doing, picking rice, carrying loads, or washing clothes. As we biked and then walked around the area they would all wave and shout "hello" as we passed. There is something so magical about this place that we even started talking more gently. It's just peace at its most beautiful.

The staff is efficient and attentive and Medi, the owner, is exceptional, running the place on his own and donating 25% of his proceeds to local orphanages. He is a wealth of knowledge and can hook you up with any adventure you wish to try. He'll arrange transport to and from wherever, accompany you to Borobudur at any hour, and even get your tickets squared away for you. The biggest treat though, was right before we left he met us on the front porch of one of our bungalows with his guitar and sang for us. He has an incredible voice that brought tears to our eyes. Do not leave until you've heard him sing! He used to live in Belgium where he worked tirelessly to create this peaceful haven and now he lives simply and happily and wants to share that with guests and his community. We just instantly loved him! We called him "The King of Cool". Check out his bright red customized VW van!

When it came time to leave Medi proposed 2 options. We could leave 2 hours earlier than we needed and ride in a large spacious van or squeeze all six of us into a much smaller car but stay for two more hours. Our kids preferred to ride squished together for the 1 1/2 hour trip back to Yogya rather than miss a single second at Medi's.

Our whole ride to the Yogyakarta airport was spent talking about our next visit to Rumah Dharma.

As others have noted he is very hard to get a hold of but stick with it. It is worth it. After much effort I did find a number that worked. Try 62 81 392 25 25 57. Tell him the French and American family sent you!

(Oh, and one last piece of advice...bring earplugs. Almost anywhere in Java you will hear the call to prayer loud and proud at around 4:30 every morning, great if you are planning an early morning temple visit not so great if you are sleeping in.)

There are four identical brick rooms which are very large and enclose an open bathroom. The bed is huge and there is a satisfactory but not super cool AC. The shower pressure is a bit weak but who cares? And the rooms are safe. It is all about the location. Rumah Dharma is in the middle of some rice fields on the edge of the town. It is a flat and easy 10 minute stroll to town and the entrance for Borobudur. There are many general stores and the usual alphamart. There are also two ATMs near the entrance to Borobudur. Medi, the owner, will drop you at the temple for the 6am opening but you could easily walk there. He even buys tickets the day before so that you don't have to queue. You can easily spend a couple of hours at the temple. Don't forget to walk up the hill to one side of the temple for a great view. And no one bothers with it and you get to leave behind the thousands of school kids! Medi also has many site seeing ideas and arranges for a guide or motorbike to take you out. I went to a Hindu temple a couple of hours away and a nice walk up through rice fields. You can spend some pleasant time having a Nescafé up there in the quiet. Other things to do include cycling around getting lost amongst the local villages or visiting the tofu factories. Don't forget to cycle to Plataran. Great good and drinks and if you order both they let you use their stunning pool. And the view of Borobudur is stunning from the cafe restaurant. Alternatively Medi will arrange for a bike to drop you up there and then pick you up later. And finally I can't forget the scrummy breakfasts at Rumah Dharma. The omelette filled with veges and cheese is to die for. And they give you some excellent Indonesian coffee and sweets. Plus fresh fruit. All of this overlooking the fields. Medi is very friendly. He's a bit slow replying to emails and the website doesn't work. Be patient. It's worth it. I'll be back!

We stayed at Rumah Dharma on our last night in Yogyakarta since its one of the nearest accommodation to Borobudur Temple which is affordable or all three of us. And, we had an awesome time here.. We stayed in one of the bungalows and add on an extra bed.. The bungalows had an open bathroom concept which is quite challenging and hilarious for us.. Oh btw, I travelled with my uncle and one of my girl colleague.

Medi, the owner is a great host.. Together with Ika, one of his employees, they took us around the village, visited the smaller temples, stopped at a stall and had a local dish and my uncle even had the opportunity to play football with Medi's team.

Our Borobudur Sunrise entrance ticket was arranged by Medi and he even dropped us and then picked us back up from Manohara Hotel which is the entrance for the sunrise tour. The foods here is simply a delicious home cooked meals..

The surrounding village is such a peaceful place.. The villagers are really friendly even the kids.. We managed to even catch an awesome sunset over the paddy field.. And one of the highlights of our stay here is that we handcrafted our very own pencil at one of the handicrafts shops in the village..

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here and wished we had the time to stay longer..

Thank you Medi and staffs.. You guys made us feel like we are simply at home chillaxing with a bunch of friends..

*hugs*

On our trip in March 2014 we travelled for a months in Sumatra, Java and Bali. Rumah Dharma was the last night of our trip and it was the best place we stayed out of all of hotels, guesthouses, losmens... The food is absolutely amazing. We had such a last delicious traditional javanese dinner and breakfast. The service is excellent. The room is very clean, tastefully decorated and spacious. The homestay is within a very peaceful landscape setting. Our stay was very relaxing, Medi the owner organised taxi rides, the tickets to the temple etc. If you want to stay in Borobodur, definitely stay at Rumah Dharma!

Room Tip: All rooms seem to be very nice.

I stayed one night with my mother, I can only be very positive from the cleanliness of the rooms, the very friendly staff, the great food, beautiful surroundings and very nice helpful owner. The rooms are clean, spacious and very nicely decorated. The Borbordur is only 3 minutes away. I would really recommend staying here. I have been travelling through Indonesia for 12 years and live here for three now, definitely in my top 3 of favorite places.

Room Tip: All 4 rooms are the same
