“Looks a million dollars but food awful”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

On a tour of Indonesia we stayed here for 2 days due to it's proximity to the temples. Fantastic room and lovely hotel but spoilt by awful food and noise due to being very close to a mosque- calling to prayer at 4 am it was as if the speaker were in the room with us. As for the food , breakfast was a disgrace. Tea coffee toast eggs rice noodles 2 cereals fresh melon. From a 5* hotel - I think not- added to this it was pretty basic quality.
Evening meal is very expensive and our salmon was not cooked. It was sent back and returned with the same veg now cold. There does not appear to be any management - it looks like it is run by 4/5 kids out of Uni. Give it a miss

This was the first hotel we've ever stayed in that asked for payment upon arrival. Not a particularly warm welcome especially after a long transfer. After that things improved. The lobby is gorgeous as are the rest of the grounds, The staff is friendly and helpful. This hotel is very close to the Borobudur grounds- 5 minute walk. The breakfast is not inspired as a choice of eggs and toast with noodles/rice seemed to be all that was offered but adequate. We stayed 3 nights and ultimately enjoyed the convenience of being closer to the Borobudur entrance, Dieng and the Merapi sights. Our room was spacious, clean (except for the heavy curtains) and comfortable with a distant view of the top of the temple. There is very little to choose from in the immediate vicinity of the hotel when it comes to dining. The food at the hotel is average and relatively expensive for Indonesia. We had a driver so we took advantage of lunch during our excursions and had something light for dinner at the hotel. Overall, a convenient and pleasant base from which to visit sights in the area without the longer drive from Yogyakarta.

Room Tip: We had the standard superior which was great.

The Saraswati has an imposing entrance, but arriving at night it was gloomy and looked quite dingy. It has fallen into the trap of using a lot of heavy fabric and furnishings and then not keeping them quite clean, and suffers from the scourge of the low-wattage bulb.
The net curtains in our room were filthy, but everything else looked very clean until I noticed a very sticky coffee spill under the bed when my foot stuck to the floor. Towels varied from limp and grey to white and fluffy. Not a good start!
Our four-poster bed was enormous and an extra pillow appeared within minutes.
We were staying for three nights, owing to a flight complication, and as the time went on we warmed to the staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble, the atmosphere, the lovely pool and garden and the food, which was fresh and well-cooked. Breakfast was a bit mundane, but the eggs came any way you wanted them, and the fruit juice had more fruit and less water than elsewhere. Even the huge speakers on the mosque next door which blasted out at 4.30 am became part of the charm!
Most of the difficulties we had came from the poor English of the staff, but why should we expect them to speak English when a large number of their clients came from Asia-Pacific? I would happily stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony overlooking the pool are cooler.

A lovely little hotel in the middle of a dead town whose only attraction is the magnificent Borobudur temple, Saraswati was impressive from the start, and all the way to the finish.

The decor, large and comfy reception area with high ceiling and gentle music, gracious staff, coconut tree-fringed pool, massage by the pool...everything was good. The room was spacious and the bed large and comfortable. The interiors were yet another testimony to the hotel's attention to detail. Kudos to everyone involved.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a balcony, which is useful if you are a smoker like me. :)

Entrance - Nice hotel entrance, set back from the busy main street in Borbudur, with tall walls, gates and sweeping driveway to large entrance lobby.

Room/Suite - Our room/suite was at the back of the hotel, accessed by a beautiful courtyard garden, reminiscent of old Andalucian (South of Spain) courtyard gardens. The room had very high ceilings (3-4m) and nice old colonial decor with columns and decorated cornices. Separate lounge, bathroom and bedroom and easy access to the pool.

Pool - Slightly outdated but not in a bad way. it added to the 'historical' feel of the hotel.

Service - A bit shakey. Most staff not comfortable speaking english, so would rather avoid you than face the embarrassment. Not to worry, once 'collared' they manage to find an english speaker pretty quickly.

All in all a big thumbs up for this hotel and a nice suprise for such a rural location.

Room Tip: I am not an expert on their rooms but the king suite was great.

We stayed 3 nights at this Boutique Hotel which has been tastefully furnished and reminded us very much of Indian architecture. The gardens were absolutely beautiful and we were amazed at the amount of wildlife that called these gardens home. The hotel is situated very close to Temples and literally only a 10 minute walk to the main gate. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable with extremely high ceilings and massive entrance doors. The breakfast was excellent which you order the night prior. The staff were so friendly, helpful and extremely attentive and every afternoon a musician played traditional Indonesian music which just added to the atmosphere and ambience of this gorgeous hideaway. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone visiting Borobudur.

This is a lovely hotel and on entering it you just feel at home. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We were given a cold drink and wet cloths to freshen up whilst checking in. The room was spacious, clean and we had a huge bathroom with lots of hot water which isn't always the case in Java. We ate dinner there, which was excellent and there was also a musician playing traditional music which added to the atmosphere. There is no buffet breakfast. Your order is taken in the evening and it is served on time and very efficiently. It was also very good. I would recommend this hotel to anybody visiting this area especially as it is so close to Borobodur Temple.
