The main deity is Durga in standing pose. A tall statue which can be seen from road itself. This is another temple where I have visited several times. The temple also has Shiva. The Nandi (Bull) which normally supposed to be in front of Lingam is not in line here. It is said that Shiva instructed bull to mpove out of sight so that he can have a good look at Manicka Vachagar (a great saint and devotee of Shiva). The temple is huge. It also houses Devi Gnanambika.

Pateeswaram Durga is one of the most beautiful Durga idols in the country. It is a 8ft black idol of a standing Durga on the head of the bison Bhasmasura. The main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, it is one of the few temples where the statue of the sanctum sanctorum Lord Shiva idol can be seen from 2 kms away.

This temple is located about eight kilometers from Kumbakonam. It is the place for the sacred cow (Patti is the calf of Kamadhenu) and has several legends referring to it. Though the temple is not as architecturally designed as Airavateswarar temple at Darasuram, it houses some of the finest idols and sculptures.
