“Historical Temple... Etymology of Kumbakonam comes from this Temple”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

Adi Kumbeshwarar temple is the biggest Shaivite temple within Kumbakonam.

The legend is that Shiva took the form of a hunter to break the Kumbam(Pot filled with seed of life which Brahma had given to Shiva for safekeeping) and the seeds of life thus spread from Kumbakonam.

The temple has a beautiful carving of Navaratri Mandapam -27 Nakshtras and Raasis(this can be seen on the ceitling as you walk along the corridor towards the sancum sanctorum), a Rare Muruga Statue with 6 faces but only 6 hands, 2 nadhaswaram made of stone . Also famous in the temple is the actual statue of Kiratamoorthy siginifying Lord Shiva in Hunter form.

“TEMPLE VISIT”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2013

A very old temple and the town is named after the presiding deity. Worth a visit. A huge temple with good sculptures right in the center of the town. Best to go in the mornings.

“Big Temple in Mid of Town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

When you have such a big temple in centre of town, it really tells you a lot about the city. Lord Shiva is the main deity in the temple. Temple always is filled with people. Quite a few shops near the temple main entrance, which makes that entrance a bit crowded, but other entrances are relatively crowd free.

Good Pillars and Carvings inside Temple. Must visit Temple.

“Serene!”

Do not miss this temple if you're visiting Kumbakonam. This temple has the lord shiva's lingam in the form of a kumbh (pot) and hence the name.
