Have you ever thought how it would be to visit Sultan's palace from Sheherezada's stories? If yes, simply go to Dogubeyazit and explore Ishak Pasha palace. Dogubeyazit itself is just a typical charmless border crossing city, but the palace and Ararat mountain nearby make it worth visiting at least for one day.

The palace itself is wonderful and we found the restoration well done and not heavy handed. The information panels are quite good and do a decent job of explaining what you are seeing. The location is just out of this world - make sure you go up to the car park at the end of the road behind the palace for superb views of it and the valley below.
Tip : if you are patient you can take the local dolmuş there for 2TL. Catch it at the start of the road that leads up to the palace from the town, you will have to wait for enough passengers before it leaves.
