This was a great way to see animals that we would ordinarily not see during our trip (an anaconda for example, close up!) Amazoonico is staffed by volunteers and we were given a tour by a young lady who was very knowledgeable about the animals, their background, and plans to release to the wild. Highly recommended!

A visit to AmaZOOnico was included as part of my stay at Liana Lodge. They are run by the same organisation and are keen for more volunteers. The work being done here is admirable, helping badly treated exotic pets back into a more normal life. When I was here I saw a poor spider monkey who couldn't extend it's arms after being in a cramped cage for most of its life. You will see parrots, capybaras, noisy toucans and jungle cats. You might be followed around by some inquisitive birds as we were. There is a small gift shop at the end and all donations are gratefully received.

I included a review of this in my review of Liana Lodge. Two women gave us the tour, one who has been there for nine months and the other who had only gotten there two days earlier. Between our questions and hers we probably could have gone on for hours, but after two hours they really did need to close for the night. It was a great experience.

And birds and pigs and any animal that needs help in Ecuador. This is a great place to see the animals of Ecuador and hear of the struggles caused by people trying to raise wild animals in captivity. Many of these animals were brought to the Reserve by people in the public who could no longer handle the animal. Many cannot be released into the wild because of their dependence on people or lack of proper habit in the area. A great experience with a very good volunteer guide. The ocelots were my favourite!

This place gives you the opportunity to get up close to some of the jungle creatures that have been confiscated as pets, or have been injured in the wild.
Their aim is to rehabilitate all the animals they can and release them, the others remain in the sanctuary.
Well worth a visit, its staffed completely by volunteers and does great work, they rely on tourist donations or on items they sell in their gift shop (Great chocolate)
