Description: The tavern is located in proximity of the entrance door of Monticchiello, a nice medieval village near Pienza. With its few places (it is better to reserve), it proposes an elegant room, furnished with taste in typical tuscan style, it is comfortable and familiar. The courtesy and the professionality of the owner, Daria, young and passionate sommelier, are an optimal guide in the choice of the plates and the wines. During the beautiful season it is possible to eat in the terrace, enjoying a wonderful sight on Pienza, the Val d'Orcia and the Amiata.Accommodation in Monticchiello- The residence "Il Torrino" is a panoramic apartment obtained from the restauration of an ancient tower belonging to the boundaries of the medieval suburb Monticchiello. The structure, in proximity of the principal access to the village, has been completely restructured from the owner with taste and scrupulous care of the details. At guests' disposal a double room and a living-room with couch-bed and TV; panoramic view on Pienza and the Val d’Orcia. The prices for the weekly stay change according to the season and are comprehensive of heating, final cleaning, household linen. For briefer stays contact the owner.

We had lunch in early October 2013 at La Porta on the front of this Osteria's high terrace overlooking a fabulous vista of the surrounding countryside. The cuisine is in true Tuscan style, and on this day I had a most delicious guinea fowl which was a special of the day. Naturally, being in sight of Montalcino, it was necessary to wash it all down with a bottle of an excellent Brunello from the wine list. Daria, the owner attended table personally and was just delightful. A most highly recommended restaurant and venue.

This tiny restaurant (you absolutely need reservations) has incredible food that you won't find at the generally excellent trattorias in Tuscany. It's located in a little town so perfect it looks like a movie set. During the summer lunch or dinner on the terrace affords incomparable views of the Val d'Orcia, but the fall and winter have their own charm in the cozy dining room. The owner was frank with us about recommendations. When we told her we were trying to choose among various dishes she steered us away from the cheese and salumi platter, telling us we could get that at many places and towards special dishes of the house. For example, a polenta timbale topped with mushroom, some great bruschette and a small vegetable soufflé with the same flavors as the famous Tuscan soup, ribollita. For our main courses we had that night's special, Osso Buco, and the vegetarian in our group had a to-die-for dish of ravioli with spinach, ricotta and truffles in a cream sauce also infused with truffles. We were so stuffed that we shared the zuppa inglese, an Italian version of trifle. The house is generous with aperitivi, amuses bouches and after dinner treats. Again they were honest in helping us select a wine between the two we were considering and counseled the one that was a bit less expensive because it was a better value.

You won't be disappointed here. It's the only restaurant recommended in the Pienza region by two very good Italian food guides--Slow Food's Osterie d'Italia and L'Espresso's I Ristoranti d'Italia, both from 2013, and usually catering to different types of diners. When they intersect you know it has to be good. The owner was very happy that we had found a pleasing selection of vegetarian options since one of her daughters is also vegetarian.

We ate at La Porta twice during our stay in Monticchiello. Each time was amazing! My parents discovered this restaurant a number of years ago and it is their favorite restaurant in the world -- I understand why. Daria, the owner, is a wonderful person, so warm and welcoming. The food is fabulous, from start to finish. It is worth the drive if you are staying outside of Montichiello!

We had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant for lunch during our recent Tour or Tuscany. Because we where on a private tour our guide organised for us to have a tasting plate for our entree - home made ravioli with truffles, home made spaghetti with wild boar and a mushroom risotto made with barley - all three where a taste sensation - my husband had the beef cheeks for his main and I had a tasting plate of local cheese which was delightful all washed down with a lovely bottle of local wine made by the owners brother. Unfortunately we had no room left for desert so I can not comment on that.

I can not comment on the price as lunch was included in our tour.

The view from here is one of the best we saw in Tuscany would loved to have stayed longer and enjoyed a few more wines and soaked up the beauty. Take a walk around the township after you have indulged in this wonderful food as it is a beautiful town and has a wonderful little church with some amazing frescos - during WW2 the town was bombed causing some of a fresco to fall from the walling revealing an unknown fresco underneath, also the acoustics in the church are amazing.

If you're a city dweller, used to lunching on the run, this is the stuff you read about. An authentic tasty lunch sitting on a sunny terrace with a postcard view over the countryside, from the walls of a quiet village. Daria (the owner) speaks English and was incredibly kind finding us a seat on the sunny terrace, despite not having a booking. Reasonably priced too and food that won't scare us foreigners (unless you haven't learnt the word 'coniglio' before leaving home).
