I stayed in this simple cottage by the sea for two weeks. It is located at the end of lovely Keralan lane close by a very active temple. During my stay 18 elephants participated in an important festival.
The owner, Mr Shashi, is very helpful. He is a retired Fisheries official who now owns a very good seafood restaurant. For a very modest price a fine meal will be delivered, piping hot, by bicycle! Mr. Shashi also took me with him when buying fish at the famous fishing docks- a great morning it was.

Go to Summer House if you want to be left alone and want to reflect on life and deep existential questions, or to write a book!

Also go if you want really nice views of the ocean (not a swimming spot), cheap, basic acco. This is not very convenient if you want to take a backwater tour, its quite a ride to the tour-head given the insane Kerala traffic!

To make up for all that, Mr. Shashi, who owns a seafood restaurant in town will put out an impressive spread of seafood - prawns, mussels and fish cooked in a hybrid Kerala-continental style, very tasty. Servings are healthy-sized! Alky is also available on request :)

Make sure to carry mosquito repellant cream and coil, you will need them during the night. Get the attendant to install mosquito nets over your bed, else you'll be skeeter feed!

    Enjoy

Room Tip: Call well in advance and get Cottage No. 3 which is closest to the water.

We are two well-travelled Australian women who have visited India 9 times between the two of us and we've never been anywhere remotely like this before in our lives! In a tropical setting, certainly is 'away from it all', requiring either a decent walk to the local bus stop or a jeep ride into town from the manager. Yes, you can sit on your verandah or in a couple of deck chairs and gaze out over the beautiful Arabian Sea, but there's no beach to walk on or swim in for miles and nothing much else to do.

Everything is clean and the big rooms have mosquito-nets and quite good bathrooms and although warm water from the showers is rare, it doesn't matter much because it's so darned hot and humid here that cold showers are a relief.

The accommodation consists of one large building divided by paper-thin walls which don't reach the roof so private conversations with your travelling companion are conducted in whispers or pen and paper! If you don't get it clear from the beginning, you will find that the rooms with a sea view cost twice as much as the room behind you, and don't make the mistake of thinking you've got a great deal if you and your companion are offered a room each on arrival! Your bill will be doubled.

Electric power (and therefore, cooling from the rickety fans) disappears quite early in the morning. It may return for an hour late in the afternoon, but it will vanish again until bedtime, leaving you to eat dinner with strangers (no choice about this) by candle-light. If you grumble and ask questions about this you will hear that this is due to a blackout. After a day or so you will notice that these 'blackouts' are localised to your accommodation building, yet the fridge still works. If you want a light to read by after dinner, throw a tantrum.

There is no menu but the food is good with a seafood banquet every night. A variety of interesting morsels comes in individual plastic bags to be shared by everyone present.

Room Tip: Best views at the front; best price at the rear.
