Description: Our restaurant is located in an old "Borda Aranesa" restored, although it is within the population enjoys a superb location next to nature, with its own car park. The atmosphere is very friendly and spacious. The cuisine is creative style, our chef continues to innovate and to work, after more than fifteen years, the unmistakable style of Portalet. We have available all year.

“Serious imaginative cooking at a reasonable price”
Reviewed April 30, 2012

We were referred to El Portalet by El Occiitan who were booked out. Fortunately we managed to get a table at El Portalet because it was almost if not completely full as well. Most of the positive comments of the other writers conform with our experience save that we did not find the menu bizarre at all. It was imaginative but not over the top. We received a warm welcome. The decor is simple country style, almost as though grandma's old furniture has been installed. The atmosphere is quiet as appreciative clients enjoy the superb food. There is a more than adequate choice of starters, fish, meat and dessert courses. For example the meat courses included rabbit, beef, chicken, veal, and duck. The servings are small but perfectly conceived and served and we found that three courses were sufficient, with three different and interesting amuse gueule while we looked at the menu. But for a prolonged lunch four courses would not be excessive. Good wine list, an excellent fino, and realistic recommendations from the staff. We were there for a birthday lunch, and all of us left on a hight.

“Crazy, but excellent.”
Reviewed March 26, 2012

OK, for open minded people only. The flavours this restaurant puts together are bizarre to say the least and the plates are works of art. When they work, it's a wonderful experience and it's worth putting up with the occasional slightly too wacky thing. For example, my curried banana pudding was delicious but the rosemary tizane (they are very fond of amuses bouches and little palette cleaners here) was an aromatic too far. Not bad value either; I can't remember exactly but about 26 Euros for 3 courses and 35+ for four.

“An excellent meal with highly original menu”
Reviewed January 3, 2012

We booked a table for 5 people for dinner. The restaurant and the welcome were warm. The decor is traditional rather than sharp chic but comfortable nonetheless. Menus in French or Spanish were available. Take a dictionary unless you're a fluent speaker as the ingredients will test a merely decent vocabulary. Or maybe just take the main meat or fish, go for it and be ready for a surprise! Some of the oddest mixes of foods and flavours are involved, and most of them work well. The dishes looked lovely and we had at least two amuse bouches along the way, such as pumpkin soup with boudin noir specks.

We opted for a 3 course dinner ( a four course one is also offered). There a good wine list too, starting at decent prices. Our meal excluding wine was just under 30 Euro, which was truly exceptional value, given the quality of the food.

The service is attentive and friendly. This was a really good meal and I'd recommend it highly.

“Michelin quality food in the Pyrenees”
Reviewed September 25, 2009

We live across the border in France and discovered El Portalet through word of mouth on a day trip to Bossost, Spain.
This hotel/restaurant is FANTASTIC: you get to choose between a 3 course meal at €24 or a 4-course meal at €32: great value for money as the food is Michelin quality, with a wide range of fish and meat dishes and incredible combinations and recipes. The place is family run and very friendly and it's often full (no surprise there).
Try it and see: worth a visit or 10!
It's London standard food in the middle of a green valley: 10 out of 10!
