Refugi Rosta

The location itself is amazing, clung on one of the sides of the valley
The actual refuge it's an historic building per se and it is worth a visit even if you decide to stay elsewhere. It is an old building with all the pros and cons of an old building. I found definitely more pros than cons!
The food is great and abundant, typical from the area. You will finish your meals happy and definitely stuffed!
Well I think in a refuge on the mountains hospitality it's all and what you will not miss here is hospitality. The owners, their family and all the staff they are always there to help, suggest, give a hand. In a moment they will be like family and your holiday will start to be seriously good when you will get to the refuge.

Take in mind that this is a refuge, so don't expect to find fancy luxury rooms or facilities. If you keep that in mind, this is the best place where to stay ever.

Ah, there's also a museum of the Pyreneisme (mountaineering on the Pyrenees) om the ground floor near to the bar and dining room, which is definitely worth visiting, even if you are not into this kind of things.

The Refugi Rosta is a unique place to stay - you'll either love it or hate it - read on to find out why! (The above rating is for those that will love it).
It is the oldest working accommodation in the Val d'Aran and dates back at least to the mid-19th century. It doubles up as a museum of Pyrenean life which you can visit without staying there - guided tours are available for a small fee. The entire establishment is furnished with authentic old furniture and artefacts.
The experience of staying there is rather like staying in a high mountain Refuge, but without the effort of walking up to one. There are some half dozen dormitories accommodating 6-9 persons each on mattresses placed side by side in a single layer (which is a cut above most mountain refuges where there are normally at least two layers). Alternatively there are a number of double rooms which offer privacy though not en-suite shower or WC. The beds are (based on a sample ot 2 rooms) antique, with matresses which mimic the valleys of the surrounding mountains. This is fine if you and your bedmate wish to spend the night on top of each other, but if you are after a sound night's sleep a dormitory is likely to be the better option! There are a couple of washrooms providing, in total, 3 showers and 4 WCs, rather crudely built and clumsily decorated, but none-the-less effective. For some reason the constructor found fitting door locks that work easily a particular challenge! The accommodation also has a wealth of exposed wiring - one wonders with which electrical regulations it complies?
The food take the form of a set menu for everyone (plus vegetarian option) and is good montain fare with a local bias; portions are generous - no one goes hungry at the Rosta.
So, should you stay there? If the idea of immersing yourself in the atmoshere of this unique historical venue appeals you certainly should. But if you are after something with more facilities you would be better advised to visit the museum by all means, but actually stay elsewhere.
