Occidental Jandia Mar
Ranked #18 of 73 Hotels in Pajara
Reviewed July 9, 2013 via mobile

We have just got back after 2 weeks here and although it wasnt our best holiday, it certainly wasnt our worse.

We had two connecting rooms which were large and clean. beds were rock hard and i woke up every morning with back ache! Hotel grounds are nice but bins around pools fill up quickly and could do with being emptied a bit more often.

The spa was nice overall but the smell in there was awful...reminded me of wet dog! We booked a few massages which are expensive but very relaxing.

Hill to beach is managable but seems worse than it is when the temperature starts rising, definately needs a more frequent bus back and forth. The beach itself is amazing...best ive ever seen.

Food was nice, but a bit repetative after a few days, also we all came down with stomach upsets a few days in to the holls and although we couldnt prove it was caused by the food, we hadnt eaten anywhere else at that point!

Jandia is a nice quiet resort, perfect for just a week but a bit boring for two weeks as theres not much to do, our evenings consisted of a few cocktails, and bed by 11pm as the AI ends promptly at that time.

Evening entertainment was a bit hitt or miss, some nights were dire others were pretty good (especially the bejing acrobats!).

Overall I would say if your looking for a relaxing family get away then its fine, if you want a bit more variety and excitment dont choose the barcelo or jandia. we made the best of the holiday but we paid fairly expensive july prices and we probably wouldnt return again.

My husband and I have have recently come back from a week away at the Barcelo Jandia Mar. We booked a last minute deal and although I did research the hotel on Tripadvisor, didn't find anything that gave me cause to worry. Having been there I still stand by this but think there are a few things people should be advised of, especially if this is going to be your main holiday away.

The hotel is very clean, the rooms are a good size and the staff are friendly. The food was nice and there was plenty of choice. There are a couple of pools but as with most hotels sun loungers are at a premium although the staff did bring out more. The hotel itself is about a 20 minute walk from the town - new part - which wasn't anything special at all but if you continue on along the beach front you reach the old town which is lovely. Definitely worth the walk (about 40 minutes) and there are some nice restaurants on the sea front - they don't look like much but the two meals we had were delicious and very reasonable. The beach is white sand and turquoise water, quite cold but to be expected considering the island is a bit breezy.

The hotel is based at the top of a steep hill, we walked down to the beach on the first day and back up again at lunch, then back down again but only did this the once as it is quite hard going in the heat. Totally doable (it was partly laziness for us) but I wouldn't advise it if you have a young family or struggle walking. The beach itself was nice but be warned that the sun loungers are not owned by the hotels and there is a charge. 12 EUROS per day for 2 loungers and an umbrella - which obviously works out quite a lot if you do that every day. There are public toilets but they are further up the beach and I did see a bar but as we didn't go in I couldn't tell you what it was like.

This is an all inclusive hotel and you do have everything you need but it is not the same as holidays we normally go on. I would class this more as full board. If you want bottled water you need to pay for this, 2 EUROS, but can fill it up again from the restaurant. Alternatively we bought some from the local supermarket on one of our trips back from the old town and paid just 29 cents. Cocktails are not included in the package. There was only one bar in the evening - although they may open another in the peak season - with only 2 members of staff and for a hotel this size the two bar staff were over run. It was not unusal to see a queue through the hotel reception to get drinks. This also closes at 12am just in case you are a late drinker!

On your last day at the hotel you need to check out by midday. This is not unusual but note that they also take your wrist bands which means you are not able to get any food or drink. We paid the extra charge of 36 EUROS to keep our room which worked for us as we had a late flight. Alternatively you can pay 8 EUROS per person for food and drink until you leave.

All of these things were not deal breakers for us and we feel we still got very good value for money. The weather was lovely all week and ultimately that is what we went for. We are beach people and like to talk a wander up and down throughout the day so as we stayed round the pool all week we were a bit stir crazy by the fourth day. However, if you have kids or love the pool you will find this has everything you need. Had we booked this for two weeks I think we would have been disappointed simply because it is not the all inclusive type of holiday we are used to. As we only booked it 5 weeks before and paid a very reasonable price we were happy that we went.

I hope this helps!

Location - easy to find if driving into morro jable from airport. Bit of a trek back from beach, main strip and village. Mainly because of the hill leading up to hotel. We hired a car and it cost €3 per day to park at the hotel. Taxis to the strip/village is only about €5.

Rooms - a number of blocks in the hotel. We were in block 2 which was away from the main building so it was nice and quiet. Room, wardrobe and bathroom were all big. TV had 3 English channels. We had two single beds. They weren't amazing; could feel the springs! Bathroom came with a nice aloe versa body wash and shampoo.

Cleanliness - rooms were given a quick going over each day. Twice we were only left with one bath towel between the two of us :( lots of food, drink and cigarette ashes and butts left on the ground around the pool area. Hotel could do with someone keeping an eye on the pool area throughout the day.

Entertainment - jambo jambo were impressive. They were on in the theatre one evening. Lots of activities for kids and around the pool area everyday.

Food, all inclusive - tropical beer is actually quite nice. The wine (white, red and sangria) wasn't great. Breakfast - bacon, eggs, croissant, pancakes, cereal. Lunch and dinner - pasta, rice, potatoes, chips, a lot of fish and either pork/chicken/beef. Some soup, salads and breads too. Ice cream, fresh fruit, dried fruit and small cakes for dessert.

Main grievance I had was that there was not enough available beds at the pool. Many people save beds but putting towels on them in the morning but don't use them until much later in the day. When you check in you receive a leaflet that states 'it is forbidden to reserve sunbeds with towels or any objects. Hotel Management remove any possible belonging and deliver them at reception' (sic) one day when I couldn't find a free bed, I asked reception if they could remove some of the items from the beds that are not being used. They said they couldn't. That rule was that bed can't be saved but that they can't enforce it. I pointed out the piece in the leaflet. The receptionists then spoke to each other in Spanish and told me that all they can do is say it to the manager who was currently busy. Two hours later they brought out extra beds. If the just policed it for a few mornings I'm sure it would put an end to the practice.

Hotel is good overall with a few niggles.First time AI in the canaries and they nearly get it right.Rooms are good-size and well equipped for space, storage, etc.,good size bathroom and balcony.Self -serve beer, wine, soft drinks works very well, and the local spirits and cocktails were of a surprisingly good strength, the pina colada and tequila sunrise recommended. The bar does close at 11 ,so be ready to join the queues and stock up early.I nearly forgot their version of Baileys which is Irish Cream comes in generous glassfuls ,and is very good. Now the bad news-the food and buffet restaurant is like feeding time at the zoo due mainly to the large groups of greedy, loud, overweight spanish families who dominate this hotel. You have to queue up most times around small serving areas for food which is not the most varied menu you come across usually.Chorizo in cognac? whats that all about? We lived on pasta for 2 weeks because every night and day it was the same old stuff night and day.Breakfast wasn,t too bad but the desserts were dire with pots of colored angel delight type stuff a regular delight. There is an ice cream section where the kids run riot and the queues grow again. We hated that buffet, but try the a la carte which is nothing special compared to other hotels we,ve been to but at least its quiet. As a final on the food, the wife who has an iron constitution and has never been ill anywhere, had bad stomachs on this trip.Jandia beach is truly stunning with a crystal clear sea.The sea is freezing at first but stick with it and enjoy the wave-jumping, its great fun.Be prepared to pay 12 euros for 2 sunbeds daily which is way overpriced but you,ll need them if your a beachie because the sun is so strong. Finally the incline back to the hotel is really steep.I work as a postie and i struggled going up that hill in the heat and the shuttle is too infrequent not going in the to mid afternoon. To sum up ,a fair hotel which could do better but is value for money i suppose.

Room Tip: Block 3 was very peaceful by the waterfall.

No champagne reception for us however the hotel is beautiful the first week was very windy hotel was quiet no rush for sunbeds 2nd week was busy had to be up by 8 for two beds together.

Food is plentiful not the best but definitely not the worst (we were worried having read previous reviews)

We had two adjoining rooms as a family room plenty of space

Reception weren't helpful at all shrugging of shoulders was the answer for everything . Comments form on reception for ways to improve we're picked up & efforts were made to improve things.

Beach was beautiful yes there is a steep hill to get to it but also a free bus service and plenty of taxis we managed with the pushchair daily my 3 yr old walked it a few times too.

Kids club ran by Sonia who was fantastic kept the children entertained and defused any situation that arose only negative was the leaking ceiling in the kids club I stayed with my children fearing one would slip on the dirty water although there were buckets and towels down! I was assured by the manager of the hotel this would be fixed early July! Evening entertainment for kids- minidisco 8.30 for 20 mins then nothing till 10pm made entertaining the kids hard!

Overall I would recommend this hotel for a relaxing holiday any issues you have fill in the comments form & they will accommodate

We love fuertaventura and the Jandia area in particular. We stayed in the Barcelo a few years ago and thought it was stunning, that may have been cause it was an 'upgrade' from our usual hotels. However, on our return we found it slightly disappointing. The spa poor was a bit murky to say the least and our room whilst well appointed was a bit scruffy - needed a bit of paint in places. There was also an unattractive musty odour on the restaraunt terrace. However the food was plentiful and good and the animacion kept us amused. Finally it felt like 11pm was official bed time !

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms that look out over frontage of hotel near to reception, near where coaches/taxi...

I went with my boyfriend and two other couples in late june. I thought the hotel grounds and rooms were clean but it was rubbish that the all inclusive finished at 11 clock. Check inn was slow but we had a lovely room. We also got told to be silent after 11 clock, when we was only playing cards. Its definitely family orientated not for groups. The beach was lovely but the resort itself isn't much to do. They had a good choice of cocktails and my friends enjoyed the beer. The food at the snack bar was the same everyday. The la cart restaurant was terrible small portions and the meat was fat and chewy. The walls in the room are very thin so you can hear everything. I wouoldnt go back but it is perfect for families or for a very quiet holiday.
