Reviewed February 18, 2018

Stayed in the Occidental Jandia Playa for one week from the 3rd of February and despite the poor weather we had a reasonable holiday. The weather for four or five of the seven days was unsettled, rainy, overcast, windy and quite cold, circa 16c. The journey from the airport to the hotel including several stops took almost two hours, the return journey about one hour ten minutes. The location on the very south of the island is a bit remote and the particular site of the hotel quite far from the centre of town.
The hotel was "just OK" it's a bit dated and for the entire week it had a large container catching the water which leaked through a hole in the plasterboard of the ceiling near the entrance to the dining room. The glass roof above the main reception area also had leaky areas, and the nice marble reception area was spoiled by several towels lying on the floor. This possibly makes it sound worse than it really was because it is a complaint which actually impinges less on guests than some of the others but it is something which most hotels would have attempted to deal with immediately. In my opinion the hotel is a poor four stars, however at £650 per head full board including flights from N Ireland, it did represent good value for money and a lot of people on full board consumed a lot of free alcohol. The trees and shrubs in the grounds are attractive, the majority of guests are German and there were plenty of sun beds. Rooms are large and staff are pleasant and hard working. The piano is played I think just one evening per week which is a pity because the pianist/singer was entertaining as was one of the other solo singers from Slovakia. Some of the entertainment areas were quite drafty.
The main reason that I would be unlikely to return to this hotel was the frequency with which some food dishes (most food dishes) were cold, it should surely be possible to keep soup warm. The large variety of desserts is probably the strong point of the menu. Although the dining area was usually busy only once did we have to queue for a few minutes for a table. Car parking I think was 5 euros a day but there was plenty of free parking on the road close by. The golf course nearby looked good and was probably the greenest part of the island.
Sadly I think my main memory of this holiday will be cold food. This was a too regular a complaint and is something which could be rectified, at least I've never experienced this problem anywhere else.

I have read some of the negative reviews and think they are expecting 5 star service for 4 star price.
Having spent 10 years working in 5 star resorts in Australia when I was younger I found this 4 star resort excellent value for money, was everything perfect no ( deserts at dinner could be better ) but we was here to relax and recuperate and I'm going home feeling feeling great.
Restaurant busy with brilliant staff, house keeping brilliant, hotel clean with lovely gardens and pools.
Thank you for a lovely 9 nights

Me and my husband have only ever stayed in 4 or 5 star hotels and would go back to every one of them but this is definitely not a 4 star hotel. It has the facilities to be a 4 star but the hotel and service provided itself are shocking. The reception desk is very slow. We changed our room because the first one had a broken shower and a dirty drain smell, however the second room was no better. The shower was always going hot and cold and the technician had to be called out twice. We had to wait over an hour just for a bath towel after phoning reception. There was never any tables available in the restaurant and the cheap cloths they use on the tables were always dirty. However the restaurant staff work very hard but are just under-staffed. The pools are good sized and there is always plenty of sun beds. Housekeeping do a great job. The snack bar has a good variety of food and so does the restaurant. Entertainment team also work very hard but the evening entertainment could be better for adults. In regards to hotel rooms being far from the pool area etc, it is not much of an issue unless you are elderly, disabled or seriously unfit. You have to pay a 10 Euro deposit for pool towels and 2 euros per change. You also have to pay 3 euros per day to use the safe and a 20 Euro deposit for use of an iron, this should not be the case for a 4 star hotel. Will definitely not be coming back.

When my wife and I booked to stay here AI for a week in late January, we thought that an Occidental hotel (part of Barceló group) would be a safe choice for a relaxing holiday. However, we didn’t realise that this hotel (in Morro Jable) has several levels of accommodation which defined the extent and quality of facilities available to us. We had booked a standard double room with garden view, but could have upgraded to a sea view for 9 euros pppn.( approx. £115 per week). Our allocated room was adequate but obviously needed some TLC (damaged chair back/sticking door/worn surfaces/dodgy light switches); the location was OK so we decided to stick with it.

Our basic AI package allowed access to the main part of the ‘Patio Canario’ buffet restaurant, the all-day ‘Morro Jable’ snack bar, plus several drinks bars around the site. If we had paid an extra 29 euros pppn. (approx.£360 per week) we could have experienced “Barcelo Plus“(sea view room/mini bar/branded drinks/better seating zone in buffet restaurant). There was a higher level “Barcelo Royal” (giving access to separate comfortable lounge areas/speciality dining options/separate pool and sun terrace areas/ etc, etc.) at a substantially higher cost.
The hotel gardens, pool areas and facilities were generally well maintained with plenty of sunbeds, and the site gave reasonable access to the beach approx. 10 minutes stroll away.

Unfortunately the weather was relatively cool and unsettled during our stay, so we couldn’t comfortably use the restaurant terrace area for many of our meals. The alternative inside was the cavernous dining hall with close seating and very high noise levels - not at all conducive to a relaxing meal! However, we found the standard and choice of food was good (even for my veggie wife), and the staff were friendly and obliging though very busy. Bottled wine, Cava, beer, juices and water of good quality were readily available. There was meant to be a dress code for dinner (banning sports gear, shorts, etc from the restaurant area) but this was blatantly flouted by an obstinate minority of ignorant guests. Out of curiosity, I asked the door manager why the dress code wasn‘t enforced, but he just shrugged his shoulders and exclaimed “what can you do?” Come on, Barcelo - accepting poor guest behaviour and lax staff attitudes just leads to dumbing down in your hotels!

Although the hotel has plenty of internal space there was a lamentable lack of comfortable seating, and no quieter areas to relax in the evenings. The Antigua bar did contain a fine looking grand piano, but sadly it remained unplayed during our stay. We briefly attended some of the evening entertainment shows, but these were so amateurishly disorganised (and located in a sprawling noisy venue) that we didn’t stay long.

Frankly, it seems as if the hotel management’s efforts are concentrated on the elite “Barcelo Royal ” level, and most other guests are left to enjoy what I would categorise as “Barcelo Minus“! I note that some Trip Advisor reviews attract a response from the ‘Guest Experience Manager’ - he would do well to switch off his computer and ask guests directly if they have any issues to resolve.

Sorry, Barcelo, but the Occidental Jandia Playa came below expectations, so no repeat visit for us in the foreseeable future.

take a room with sea view, it is fantastic. Very good rooms and nice bathroom. Clean. Nice bars and a very good restaurant. There are a few shops near the hotel, but you can walk to Morro Jable along the sea og along the shops.
