We stayed in the Barcelo Jandia Playa from 26th September to 3rd October 2012 on an all inclusive basis and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We went on holiday as two families, each with a two year old.
Initially when I booked this hotel 3 months prior to going the reviews were good, but lately I was a bit doubtful before we went as the more recent reviews were bad, but I can assure anyone who is thinking of going here, it is very nice. We went to the other side of the island in May 2012 and stayed at the Elba Carlota in Caste de fuste, and we thought this was an excellent hotel as well.
The transfer time to the Barcelo Jandia Playa from the airport is about 1& 1/2 hours.
Room -
The room we were give in block 2 was very spacious, although the only bad point about it was it was on the ground floor, which meant we couldn't open the patio doors as the toddlers would run off! the management did offer to move us to another room in two days but we declined as it was too much hassle to pack everything and then unpack again. No sea view or pool view from our room but very close to the snack bar. The room was cleaned every day and towels changed, and beds made up, hairdryer was adequate, TV if you needed it, and a fridge, which had water in it when we arrived. There was air conditioning was operated by a thermostate and there was also a ceiling fan, which was great.

Pools - 5 pools in total (although 2 pools are in the Premium part of the hotel, and there is 1 baby pool). There is a baby pool beside the play area, but no one ever used the baby pool, I think it was because there was no area for the parents to sit down. It could benefit from having a chair or sun lounger beside the baby pool.
The pool near the swim up bar was ideal for small children, as it was very shallow for quite a distance. There were other deeper pools which were good as well.

Bars - During the day there was the pool bar, which was always quite busy, but the barmaid worked very hard and was very nice. The swim up bar was also part of this, but as there was only one bar maid she didn't serve anyone who waited at the swim up bar as she was always very busy at the top bar, which was quite disappointing if you wanted served in the pool. There was also the opportunity for self service at the pool bar for san migel, slush puppies, and all soft drinks. There was self service of the san migel, wine and soft drinks throughout the whole of the complex, from all the bars, restaurant and snack bars, which was excellent and saved queing. Around the pool there were large 1/2 pint paper cups and not the very small plastic cups which we got at most hotels. At night in the bars it was all glasses and proper pint tankards for the san migel.
There was a piano bar in the -1 level, a theatre with a bar in the 0 level and a lobby bar in the level 1. There was also a disco but we never stayed up that late.

Restaurant & food - Large restaurant, waiters worked very hard and cleared tables quickly, everything was always very clean, lots of chef's cooking food as you waited for it. Food was very good and much better than we expected, even compared to The Elba Carlota.

Snack bar - Well stocked snack bar with a chef and waitress who was there cooking all the time. Much better than any other 4 star all inclusive hotel as there was a huge choice of salads, pastries, breads, burgers, hot dogs, chips, hams, and cheeses, melon, cakes and deserts etc.

Entertainment - The childrens entertainment was very poor compared to our last hotel. However only about 6-8 children attended every night which was a bit poor turn out and may be thats why only 1 employee kept them entertained for half an hour. The childrens entertainment started at 8.30pm which was a bit late anyway.
The Broadway show was very good, and the hard working staff at the hotel put on this show, and worked long hours, as they also done all the entertainment around the pool in the morning, like yoga, water aerobics, archery and the pool disco etc. All in all, the entertainment was good, although the music around the pool during the morning and afternoon was quite loud.

Beach - we only went to the beach once, as it was quite a walk with 2 two year olds. It is supposed to be 600 meters from the beach, but it is a lot longer, it took about 15 minutes to walk there, and you have to get a lift down to the lower level then through a tunnel under the road to get to the beach. The photos of the hotel/beach are very misleading. The beach is further than you think!! But it is lovely, and not as windy as on the other side of the island.

All in all, the hotel was excellent, the staff do their up most to make you happy, and we enjoyed our stay. I would recommend this for any age groups, as it is very spaceous. It is built on a hill so there are a few steps and ramps everywhere. Please don't be put off by any bad reviews, it is a good 4 star all inclusive, and worth the money we paid for a week all inclusive.

Room Tip: If you are travelling with small children, ask for a room with a balcony, as its safer than a ground...

This is a review of the Club Premium only, where my partner and I stayed for a wekk in September. What an excellent holiday. This the 4th all inclusive we have been on and was by far the best, It is certainly worth paying the extra for the Club Premium - you also use of all the other facilities of the htel and the Jandia Mar.The kack of children, the food at the a la carte and club restaraubt as well as the peaxe and quiet is well worth paing for.
On arriving the Clubs dedicated receptionist was excellent, very freindly and helpful, as she was throughout our stay. The roon was spacious as was the bathroom. The balcony had decent chairs and table - not just the normal flimsy white ones. You can drink the contents of the mini bar once without cost and this included a bottle of champagne, beer and soft srinks. Two bottles of water were replaced daily.Other extras were a bathrobe, slippers and various other items in the bathroom.
The club area has two large pools, one of which is only 0.8 mtre deep. There is also a large whirlpool - excellent for cooling down when the waiter comes round with cocktails. Drinks throughout our stay, not only in por bar, but the lobby bar as well were branded names
The food was excellent with plenty of choice at all times/ Breakfast and lunch were served in our own restaraunt on a buffet basis, with waier / waitress service for drinks. Merche and Sylvia - two of the waitresses were brilliant. Some food was cooked as show cooking, eg omeletted for breakfast and steks / fish for lunch.
Evening meals were in the a la carte amd was restaraunt class with usually three choices, although as I do not eat fish I was sometimes limited to one.If Alfonso was waiting on the whole experience was excellent
The animation team "next door" seemed very active, organising volleyball, salsa water polo etc but they seemed to cater more for the Spanish - hey ho you are in Spain and it beats parts of Rhodes which is mostly in German. The beach is at the bottom of the site (which is massive) and you get to it via a lift. By the lift there are also a few shops - SPAR etc but turn right and 15 mins along there are loads of shops / bars etc.
Would I go back again - we are - in February. Had a gret relaxing holiday

Room Tip: For privacy it might be a good idea not to get a ground floor room, however you could nip to the bar...

We stayed at the Barcelo Club Premium - I think we paid about £200 extra each to do that. Firstly, I would say that if you definitely plan to stay at this hotel you really should stay premium. We saw the non-premium part of the hotel, and it looked very, very shabby, worn out, and quite dirty. The non-premium dining areas reminded me of a school canteen, so we were really relieved we paid the extra.
The Premium section is beautiful. A wonderfully quiet and clean pool, and restaurant area. Check in was fine and our room was okay. Nothing special, but good enough. There were plenty of sun-beds by the pool. The guests were mainly German, which we rather liked.
Unfortunately, this was where the good points ended.
Firstly, I am a vegetarian and have a gluten allergy. The only vegetarian option at most meals was a tomato pasta, which I could not eat as it contains gluten. Most of the salads contained fish or meat for some reason - I just did not understand why fish could not be a side dish. I quite literally ate tomato and cucumber for an entire week, and for the first time ever, lost weight on an all-inclusive holiday.
The waiting staff speak very little English, and do not understand the majority of the menu, which strangely is written in English as well as Spanish. Throughout the week I was only able to get one waiter to understand the word 'vegetarian'. I also speak German, but they did not understand German either, which seemed a little strange as 90% of guests are German. On the whole, we found the waiting staff to be very slow, and often, quite unhappy. It genuinely seemed as if they did not want to be there. Throughout the day, we would spend around 10 minutes a time waiting for service at the bar, which was quite frustrating for a holiday. We think that the bar really should have been staffed all day. Once a member of staff arrived at the bar there would be no apology, and they would be very slow!
Additionally, our patio door did not lock and despite reporting it to reception, it was not repaired. Our room was burgled on day 3 and the hotel management told us that, "They accept no responsibility for loss or theft." They were very unhelpful, bordering on rude, and I felt that they did not believe us. When we asked to report it to the police, we were told that the police station was many miles away, that it would take an entire day to report it, and we would have to pay an interpreter 35 euros an hour to do so. We didn't manage to get our patio door repaired throughout the time we were there, and I did not feel safe.
I have never left a negative review about a hotel before - neither of us consider ourselves to have particularly high standards, however, we really were left feeling quite disappointed. On the whole, we did have a good holiday, but it was let down in several ways. We have stayed at Barcelos several times in the past, and sadly, we would not return to this one, even if we were not burgled.

Room Tip: I think we stayed in room 252 - it was nice enough. Definitely pay extra for the Premium option if...

We stayed all inclusive for 1 week and thank goodness it wasn't for 2 weeks. The room was clean but the furniture was shabby, the air conditioning kept leaking water down the walls and onto the tiles for 3 days, however, the maintenance guy did come out each time and repair it even at 11pm. the fridge in the room well whatever we put in came out warmer than it went in. We were in Block 8 so it was an uphill walk to the reception where the restaurant was situated. All inclusive what a joke we were allowed 1 visit to the al a carte restaurant so we booked only to find it was a buffet night.. we had to pay a deposit for the beach towels and if you wanted them changed it cost 2 euros per towel for laundering them we were told water is expensive here well sorry but that's not my problem. I agree with another review that the waiters etc only really bothered with the Spanish speaking guests. Also agree with the food it was barely warm and the plates were cold not a enjoyable experience and coffee in paper cups ahh.
We went out most days and even had a couple of meals out much better than the food at the hotel. If you fancy a walk go to the port it takes about an hour but well worth it the views are stunning. The weather made this holiday but we will never stay at this resort again or recommend it to our friends.

Room Tip: Probably upgrade but not worth the extra money.

We stayed in the Club Premium section of the hotel for 11 nights from 1 Sept. Apologies in advance for the long review but want to describe as best as I can as not many english reviews of the premium section of the hotel!

Arrival
We arrived at the hotel at 9pm and the receptionist checked us in quickly. We asked if there was still somewhere open to eat and where told where the premium restaurant was. Our bags were taken to our room for us.

Room
Nice clean room. Although it is described as a "seaview" room we were on the ground floor looking over the premium pool area and could only see the sea if we stood on tip toes. Free safe provided in the room. Had a nice clean patio free on bugs, comfy chairs. Room and patio cleaned daily by maids. Had mini bar in room but this is not replenished at all (have to upgrade room to master double for €30 per person per day for this). We discovered towards the end of the holiday that we did not have a bottle opener provided to open the drinks with so had to go to reception and request one. Not enough hangers in wardrobe. Also small touches were missing - like a box of tissues, alarm clock, maybe an ipod dock - considering the amount you pay you would expect things like this in the premium room. The bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in - it was twin beds pushed together though and one of the legs on the bed was loose and kept slipping. We could also hear the "antics" of guests above us.
Bathroom
Nice size. Plenty of towels and free pool towels in room (no deposit for these and no charge to change - unlike in the non-premium part of the hotel). Clean but no venilation unit so had to open bathroom window (which made me feel like someone could look in from the corridor outside...) Some toiletries provided in the hotel but only 1 small bottle of shampoo and 1 small bottle of shower gel. Also had toothbrush each and toothpaste provided, shower cap and show shine kit. Hairdryer was rubbish and took me half an hour to almost dry my hair (normally takes 10mins at home!) Also there is a phone in the bathroom right next to the toilet - not sure why this is needed??!! haha

Food
The food in the premium part of the hotel was really good. Breakfast and lunch was served in the restuarant in the premium section. Breakfast plentiful with bacon, eggs, sausages (but made from frankfurters), pancakes, crossants, fruit, cheese, ham etc. Lunch was equally good with hot and cold food, pasta, rice, meat, fish, salad etc. Also steak cooked to order. Dinner was served in the premium a la carte restauarant which is located in the main part of the hotel. Only premium guests can eat here. 2 choices for each course which change each day, then there are items available same everyday (steak, pasta, and fish of the day). Guessing they have dinner in the main part of the hotel to encourage guests to visit other parts of the hotel so they are not holed up in premium all the time??
It helps if you speak Spanish too - waiters seemed to pay more attention to Spanish guests.
We did eat in the main hotel buffett on 2 evenings but even though the food was nice we thought it was like a cattlemarket! everyone pushing in to get food and taking as much as they can so no left for anyone else!
We also ate in the themed restaurant one night which had to be booked via reception. food was ok, not much choice though. funniest thing was the chef describing what each of the meats were - saying it in spanish and then playing charades as to what the animal was! hilarious!

Bars
Premium bar is open from about 10am to 7pm and serves mosts drinks. Also the waiters bring round a "cocktail" to everyone round the pool at 11am everyday. Other bars in the hotel include pool bar in main hotel (we didnt go there) which is open til 6.30pm. The lobby bar is open from 6.30mpm til 11.30pm and the woman bartender was amazing! working on her own to serve drinks, clear tables, and put glasses in dishwasher. she worked really hard. The piano bar is also open from 6.30pm til 11.30pm and gets really busy before and after the entertainment.

Entertainment
There is no entertainment at all for premium guests during the day - I think the hotel would benefit by providing some entertainment - maybe bingo, or casino night, or water aerobics, just something! During the day you could hear all the entertainment going on in the main hotel but couldnt see it. They must play the 2 x club songs at least 4 times a day round the main pool - it gets annoying after a few days on this!!!! haha evening entertainment was ok - abba mania and magic show were great.

Pool area (premium)
Pool area was clean but lots on ants and little spiders running around. Main pool in the premium area was 0.8m deep and needed retiling. Other pool was 1.5m deep. Someone had stuck a used plaster in the wall of the pool (yuck!) this was there all week - god knows how long it had been there for! Jacuzzi was good and went on every half hour for about 15mins. When we 1st arrived we had no problems with getting good sun loungers in good locations at 10.30am. But after a few days more and more people arrived and were reserving all the good beds before breakfast so at 10.30am only sun longers that would be in the sun all day with no shade at all would be available. we had to start reserving beds before breakfast along with everyone else (even though the hotel "does not allow reserving".

Jandia
We did walk into Jandia one day by taking the shortcut through the main hotel and using the lift by the shopping mall. It still took 30mins from the premium section until we got to the first shop within Jandia - all unshaded so a very hot trip this was! Plenty of shops all selling the same stuff, Although shop owners stand at front of their shops trying to entice you in which can be off putting.
We also used the free coch pick up from the hotel to go to Oasis Park Zoo (see seperate review).

Check out
This took about 30 seconds with the premium seciton manager. we could still use premium section until we got picked up for the airport and there was a room to store our luggage.

Conclusion
Great hotel and food just needs a few extra touches for the money you pay. Learn Spanish before you go to get better service.

Room Tip: email the hotel before hand to request a room on the 1st floor so that you actually get a seaview
