“Staying in a restored medieval tower in Umbria”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

The Torre Antica in Viepri is a home carved out of a medieval keep where one can experience country life in a picturesque Italian village in the heart iof Umbria, near the famed town of Todi. One hears the warbling o birds and the flutter of pigeons's wings against the small windows through which one expects to see knights on horseback and ox-pulled carriages on the paths below. It is a soothing experience which provides an ideal environment to read, relax and dream.

The only drawback may be for people who have trouble climbing steep stairs as one has to go up and down but the view and the sensation from above are worth the small trouble.

Martani is the oldest hotel in Belitung. Kinda spooky on the first time I saw the hotel's building and enter it's lobby. But the standard room is quite big and the bathroom is also quite spacious ad the most important thing, the room is also very clean and neat. Considering the super affordable room rates and strategic location (KFC is the one and only fast food restaurant in town and it's in walking distance from Martani), Martani Hotel is very recommended place to stay.

Room Tip: pick room based on how many people you go with on your trip. One standard room is only for max 3 per...

If you have never been to Umbria, you should start with this small village where you will find a delicious B&B in an ancient tower fully refurbished by Roberto, immersed in the nature and surrounded by hills. Wake up and open window, you will look at wheat fields, woods and country roads.
Me and my friends spent 5 amazing days having fun and relax.
Viepri is very closed to Todi, a mediaeval town beautiful and romantic, and not far of way from Perugia and other Umbria's towns.
Roberto will suggest to you great places to visit, eat and drink. This place is also fabulous for cyclists. We look forward to coming back as soon as we can and recharge ourselves!

The owner Roberto was really helpful could not do enough to make sure our stay was enjoyable, its part of an old castle that he has refurbished, can be a bit chilly but if you are in in the evening just light the fire soon warms up. the facilities were very good, bedrooms all a good size and bathrooms well fitted. some might find the stairs a bit steep ( but it is a tower after all) we would recommend it. Its in a tiny hamlet with no bar or shop but is in easy distance of places to visit. local family restaurant just outside Massa Martana is brilliant and inexpensive.

Come visit Umbria, it is a wonderful part of Italy where good food abounds. I have never eaten better roasted pork in my life! So succulent. And it is gorgeous – dotted with many wonderful small towns. So, come to Umbria – come to Viepri a perfect spot to make day trips to special places: Spello, Todi, Montefalco, Trevi, and even Orvieto, to name a few. Stay in an ancient tower that has modern plumbing: Torre Antica.

I heartily recommend staying at this ancient tower lovingly converted into apartments by the owner, Roberto Nizzo, a young builder-contractor, and father of two young children.
He lives with his family in nearby Todi as does his sister, Lidia Nizzo, who is a designer and assisted with the painting and decorating in the apartments. This is not your normal B&B as there are kitchens where one can prepare one’s own breakfast and other meals, too, if one wishes. There is also a washing machine available off the terrace. We were in awe of the huge beams, and thickness of the walls, and never could figure out the interior geometry of where one living quarters began and another ended, and who was living over, under, or next to whom. Not that it mattered – you never heard a thing inside – except for the occasional scrape of a chair on the tile floors which somehow did like to sound travel in mysterious ways. Ricardo has some funny little touches, a radio attuned to a music station comes on automatically when one goes into the bathroom – never did see the radio, though! The bathrooms are thoroughly modern with good hot water for showering. Radiant heat helped us to dry our laundry and we enjoyed the fireplace with wood provided for our use where we spent many a pleasant evening in easy chairs. Good bed, too, really important, and very nice bedding and towels.

Viepri is a tiny “hamlet”. I call it that to distinguish it from a village which might boast a bar, or café, or small ma and pa grocery, but Vierpri has none of these, it is simply a cluster of residents radiating out from the old ancient tower and surrounding old buildings. There is a tiny, pleasant piazza and public parking area. The inhabitants are friendly and will help you if asked. Smaller surrounding individual standing houses have gardens, and trees. Walnuts and acorns are gathered enthusiastically – walnuts for personal use, acorns to feed the pigs.

This is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy simply being in the Italian countryside. The hill towns of note are within easy driving distance all have good dining opportunities and attractions worth seeing – museums, cathedrals, ruins, castles.

If you plan on spending any time in the Umbria region of Italy (which I recommend as highly as I do Tuscany!) and you're looking for a B&B or rental apartment that is centrally located then Torre Antica is it!

My wife & I travel somewhere new every year and this year was Italy. So we've become pretty savvy B&B hunters and we were astounded at the quality of this new B&B in Viepri just north of Massa Martana in the Perugia area of Umbria.

Roberto Nicco has spent the last 10 years gutting and renovating the interior of an old chapel and its tower. Each floor is its own creation, with a bedroom on the top-most floor in which we stayed. There is a small kitchen area that came in very handy. The taste in decorating was impeccable.

Folks, you don't find places like this every day. We spent three wonderful days exploring Umbria from this amazing old place.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
B&B Ancient Tower is the most characteristic place in the village of Viepri, situated in the municipality of Massa Martana (8 km), very close to Todi (13 km).Its peculiar structure was built on the ancient gate to the village, above the small XVI-century church of S. Giovanni Battista, along the big medieval walls dating back to 1390. It is located just in the middle of the region and all of the main tourist sites (Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, Montefalco, Spoleto and Valnerina) can be easily reached. The tower windows and terrace overlook the surrounding countryside and the small village, where time seems to have stopped. Its very recent restoration has been carried out with great care and attention, using only original materials. The rooms, furnished with Poor Art, are spread over five floors and each of the three double rooms is equipped with a private bathroom. They can be split into two separate units, each with its own cooking corner and fireplace. This is the ideal place to spend a holiday in Umbria between nature and landscapes, art and architecture, fine wines and cuisine, for a romantic weekend or quite simply for a relaxing break. ... more   less
