“FAWLTY TOWERS IS ALIVE AND WELL IN THE BLACK ISLE. DON'T GO HERE”
Reviewed April 22, 2011

After problems obtaining a confirmation we arrived to be told we were expected the previous day! We also mentioned that a 3% surcharge had been added to our bill for credit card payment, but not mentioned on the website. The owner apologised and promised to rectify this. Never mind - mistakes happen.

The room was fine but the bathroom had not been cleaned - also it had no towels. We found pubic hairs in the shower, body hairs in the bath and kindly asked the owners to make sure this was cleaned up while we went to dinner. On our return, we were subjected to a torrent of abuse from the owner's wife because we had complained. She then told us to leave rather than resolve the issue amicably!

To avoid further unpleasantness we agreed to leave at 9.00pm and find another hotel - difficult in a small community. We asked the owner's wife to ensure we were reimbursed including the 3% surcharge. She told us, very ungraciously, that it was their choice whether to do so

We spent 2 nights here and can only echo what has been said in other reviews. Bill and Gill love what they do and take great pride in making guests feel at home. Apart from the amazing view, comfortable rooms and delicious breakfasts we especially loved the bathroom and the fluffy white bathrobes which were really appreciated after a hot bath following a soaking in torrential rain! Would love to have stayed longer as it's a lovely area, but we'll be back

We were greeted by Bill and shown about the place. Everything was exceptionally clean and tidy and the views from the breakfast room and bedroom/balcony were outstanding. All the information we required was available in our room including access to the broadband internet connection. Everything about the place was finished to a high standard.
Breakfast the next morning was excellent with plenty of variety including haggis and scrambled eggs.
Would happily recommend this bed and breakfast to any of our friends and fully intend to stay there again if we are ever in the area.

I don't know what I can add about Water's Edge which isn't in the other reviews. We have been raving about it since our stay.

The pictures don't do it justice, the location is excellent, the bedrooms large and well equiped. Gill thinks of everything you might need and her attention to detail is amazing. I cannot think of anything which wasn't perfect.

They certainly deserve their 5 star rating and I would definitley go there again if I need accommodation in the area. I have stayed in many hotels on business, many 5 star, and I prefer the informal and personal touches of Water's Edge.

Very warm welcome from our hosts who could not do enough for us during our stay. Room was a good size, light, clean, airy and comfortable with a great view over the water. Great location within the Black Isle and not spoilt by tourism. Short drive to Inverness or Loch Ness. We loved the beauty of the area and would have loved to had spent much longer there. One day we will return to Fortrose and I know where I will be staying.

What can I say about Water's Edge. We stayed in Bedroom 1 which was a good size, really fresh and clean and with all the little extras you could need or think of. The bed was so comfortable we slept wonderfully (the 9 hour drive due to the volcanic ash flight cancellations may also have helped). The claw foot bath was delightful and the view was stunning.
We tried a few of the breakfast selections and each time cleared our plates. I was disappointed we had to leave really early on our last day as we had to miss breakfast!
Bill and Gill could not have been more welcoming and they have the amount of contact with their guests at just the right level - they were there when we needed them but didn't overpower us as other B & B owners have done in the past. Water's Edge is just a 5 minute walk into town so it's easy to pop in for food or drinks. Overall highly recommended and I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else if we return to the area.

Stayed with Bill and Gillian for a few nights. The house is very beautiful. Tastefully appointed. It sits right at the water with a garden sloping down to the Firth. The rooms are magnificent. Spacious, airy, super comfortable, with french doors that open to your patio overloooking the water, with no obstructions to your view. Luxury fluffy bathrobes; the best shower with high water pressure; a selection of wonderful teas including White Tea; quality hair and body products. Gillian adds delightful touches with fresh cut flowers. The towels are huge and fluffy. Bill and Gillian are superb hosts. They achieve the perfect balance of attentive and natural hosts whilst maintaining sufficient space for their guests. The B & B is very well designed. We did not feel that we were encroaching in someone's home. There are two superb restaurants in the area. One, Eileann Dubh, is 5 mins walking distance from the B&B to the cute town. The other is nearby in Rosemarkie, The Bistro, and does require a car. There is nothing more wonderful than gazing at the water when you wake from the comfort of your pillow. Bed is brilliant. We will remember this stay for years to come.
